The County Cork region
County Cork is full of contrast; it is home to Ireland’s second largest city and dozens of vibrant, atmospheric towns and villages. Yet it’s full of truly breathtaking natural beauty. With unspoilt beaches, historic castles, and modern visitor attractions, there’s plenty for all ages to absorb. If you’re a fan of beautiful scenery, dramatic skies and exploration, this is the place for you. From the bustling seaside town of Youghal in the east to the rugged peninsulas and harbour villages of the west, there is always plenty to see and do in County Cork.
The Macroom area
Set in the picturesque Sullane River valley, the town of Macroom is dominated by the stunning walls of its castle. This bustling settlement is home to a number of shops, restaurants and pubs, and also holds a twice-weekly street market. Castle Demesne is one of the region’s lesser known tourist attractions and is set amidst hundreds of acres of woodland offering riverside walks and stunning, panoramic views of the town. Three miles away is Europe's only extensive remains of the Alluvial Forest and the town's museum houses a fascinating anthology of folklore material together with one of the finest collections of the West Cork hooded cloak. Carrigaphooca Castle, set on an impressive outcrop of rock is worth visiting, as are the cities of Cork and Killarney.
