Carno lies in the fertile river valley of the Severn, and according to Welsh Literature is the "Paradise of Powys".
The village is located on the A470 North to South Wales main trunk road.
The main industry in Carno is agriculture, with both sheep and cattle being farmed. Remains of a Roman fortress, called Caer-Noddfa, are contiguous to the village; and vestiges of two castles are on a hill above Avon Cerniog, and on a spur of Allt-Mawr, both within a mile of the village.
A battle, decisive of the sovereignty of North Wales, was fought, in 946, at the village; and another, of fierce character, with similar result, was fought, in 1077, on Mynydd-Carn.
Carno was the original Welsh base of the Laura Ashley company, when Bernard and Laura moved there from Kent in 1961. The factory closed in 2005. Laura and Bernard are both buried in the churchyard at Carno.
Carno was home to the family of Chicago Outfit gangster Morris Llewellyn Humphreys, who was born in the village in 1899.
The Machynlleth / Carno area
Machinations - soft play barn with cafe and automated wooden toy museum in Llanbrynmair where you can also feed and pet the numerous rabbits!
Trout Pool in Carno where you can obtain a day licence. Llyn Clywedog near Llanidloes offers fishing and sailing.
Golf Driving Range in Caersws a 10 minute drive from Carno
Mid Wales Shooting Centre in Trefeglwys also a 10 minute drive from Carno
Mid Wales Off Roading Centre in Aberhafesp-10 minute drive from Carno
Machynlleth has a market on Wednesday, a very lively day, Llanidloes market is on a Saturday morning and Newtown is on Tuesday. Charlies is always worth a visit in Newtown and Coed Y Dinas in Welshpool.
Borth beach and Ynyslas are great for sandy days a 40 minute drive away. Aberystwyth, Aberdyfi and Tywyn are lovely seaside towns.
Coed Y Brenin Mountain Biking Centre for outdoor fun for all ages - an hour away. Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris is a good day out with that eco feeling.
King Arthurs Labyrinth and the Corris Craft Centre make a good place to visit.
The Aleppo Merchant is the pub in Carno where home cooked meals are served daily. The Talkhouse in Pontdolgoch and Maesmawr Hall in Caersws have a very warm welcome with great food.
A little further in Newtown, a visit to The Waggon and Horses is a must during your stay.
Numerous Take Away outlets in Machynlleth, Newtown and Llanidloes

We stayed for a long weekend with my elderly parents, to celebrate an eightieth birthday, and it couldn't have been more suitable. We were made very welcome and the well-equipped accommodation in a lovely spot was ideal for our purposes. All of us enjoyed the hot tub, and we were very comfortable. Sarah had kindly arranged excellent flowers and balloons for the birthday 'girl', and it was so convenient to have a Tesco delivery waiting for us - though if you forget something the shop is very handy. The cabin is very spacious and airy - the double height sitting room is lovely, as is the mezzanine and balcony. Only one word of warning - the double beds are very low to the floor - anyone who doesn't find it easy to get in and out of a chair would find getting in and out of the beds next to impossible. That said, the twin beds are of a normal height, and the low double beds are very comfortable, though one of them has no headboard which makes reading in bed tricky and might not suit everyone. But these are minor niggles and we would love to come again - we may very well do so! |

Me, my parter and our two friends stayed in the Ty Peren cabin between the bank holidays in April and had an absolutely fantastic time. The location is amazing, it was great waking up to the little lambs and horses in the field opposite, very peaceful and relaxing. The hot tub was big enough to fit the four of us and was a great way to spend our evenings, alongside a BBQ and a glass of wine :-) The cabins were very spacious and extremely clean. We also enoyed the sauna in the shower! We found plenty to do with the help of the leaflets kept in our cabin and the Humphrey's! We went biking, walking, horse riding, fishing, clay pidgeon shooting (and we only went for 5 days). It is a lovely part of Wales and we will definately be staying at Dwr y Felin again, we look forward to returning! Becky, Rick, Caroline & Phil |
