The Madeira region

Madeira also known as the Pearl of the Atlantic or floating garden is situated between latitude 32º22’20" and 33º7’50" with its longitude between 16º16’30W and 17º16’38"W. The island of Madeira has a surface area of 459 square miles (741 km2), (35 miles long and 13 miles wide). The island is 310 miles from the African coast and 620 miles from the European continent, which is the equivalent of a 1 hour 30 minute flight from Lisbon. The archipelago, discovered by the Portuguese in 1418, is made up of the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and the uninhabited islands of Selvages and Deserts.

These islands, because of their privileged geographical position and mountainous relief, have a surprisingly mild climate. Very mild average temperatures, 22ºC in the summer and 16ºC in the winter, and a moderate level of humidity, confer upon these islands exceptional subtropical features. The seawater temperature is also very mild, because of the influence of the warm Gulf current, presenting averages of 22ºC in the summer and 18º in the winter.

Today, it is a popular year-round resort, noted for its Madeira wine, flowers, and embroidery artisans, as well for its annual New Years celebrations that feature spectacular fireworks (considered the largest in the world according to the Guinness World Records). The main harbour in Funchal is an important stopover for commercial and trans-Atlantic passenger cruises between Europe, the Caribbean and North America.

Machico is a tranquil picturesque town located on the south east side of the island. It was the landing point of the discoverers of Madeira in 1419. Machico prides itself on having the oldest church in Madeira dating back to the 15th century, and has two forts and numerous other places of historical interest. It has a beautifully paved promenade dotted with fountains and a wonderful golden sand beach with crystal clear waters and good facilities for swimming and sunbathing.

Local amenities include restaurants, bars, public garden and parks, supermarkets, shops, banks with ATM's , post office, clinic, pharmacy. Machico is well serviced with buses and taxis. Campo do Golfo is conveniently situated close to Machico at Santo da Serra and the airport is a 5 minute drive away. Machico is a good starting point for many of the breathtaking levada walks on the northeast side of the island, and is a relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of Funchal which is a twenty minute drive away.

"Best apartment I have stayed in."

Stayed at Case Branca apartment which is owned by Kevin and Cidalia, who also own Case Che, which is advertised on Holiday Lettings. Kevin and Cidalia couldn't have been more helpful. The apartment was beautiful and everything you could wish for. Kevin and Cidalia ensured on arrival we were made to feel very much at home. Not only was everything beautiful and clean but they went the extra mile. They provided dressing gowns, beach towels, a phone was on charge so we could call them, if needed, or make local calls plus many other extras. Another really thoughtful touch, they had placed a beautiful flower arrangement on the dining table which was the first thing we saw when we entered the apartment.
The apartment was well placed with the beach, restaurants and shops all within very each walking distance.
There is a map of the town in the apartment which we found useful on our first couple of days to help us find our way around.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the apartment to anyone looking to stay in Madeira.
