The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Travellers who want the best of central Italy are now heading for Le Marche, the third region, alongside Tuscany and Umbria, that makes up the area. The region lies on the eastern side of central Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the high Apennine mountains and much of it remains unspoilt by the ravages of mass tourism.
Whether you want to admire masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture, trek across wild uncharted mountains or hunt out the best of the catch in a Mediterranean fishing port, Le Marche has enough to keep you busy for years. Many visitors who come to Le Marche are looking for a taste of the "real" Italy!
WHEN TO GO While it can be hot between mid-July to mid-August, it is rarely overcrowded and up in the mountains the breezes are cooling.
May, June and September are the ideal months to tour Le Marche if you can't take the heat; the landscape is clothed in spring green or the first tints of autumn.
Macerata area
MACERATA (15 Ks) a dignified town, known across the world for its annual open-air opera festival (24 July to 13 August 2008) in the Arena Sferisterio; Macerata is a human-scaled provincial capital that also warrants a visit for its other charms.
TREJA (9.5 Ks): this papal stronghold was besieged during the wars of Guelfs against Ghibellines. But nowadays its atmosphere is altogether more benign and the fortifications along its solid ramparts have been replaced with houses and balconies decked with washing.
CINGOLI (18 Ks): a walled town built on a hill that receives the last rays of the sun when all around is in shadow; The place has also earned the title "the Balcony of the Marche" for its sweeping panoramas.
A remarkably attractive small hill town, RECANATI (25 Ks) is close to the heart of many Italians as the birthplace of one the country's greatest poets, Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837).
The striking hill town of LORETO (31Ks) lies just inland from the Adriatic Sea and is one of the world's most important shrines to the cult of the Virgin Mary. The town mainly exists to service the thousands of pilgrims who travel here from around the world.
JESI (32 Ks): this thriving and elegant centre is one of the most beguiling towns in this stretch of Marche region and boasts a sophisticated old centre and lively cultural life that should not be missed.
Just south of Ancona rises the solitary limestone peak of MONTE CONERO (42 Ks) whose steep slopes slide down to the sea and the prettiest beaches (Numana, Portonovo, Sirolo) on the whole of the Northern Adriatic shore.
The FRASASSI CAVES (66 Ks) in the heart of Genga area, are the longest and among the most interesting in Italy with a 240 m high central chamber which is large enough to comfortably hold Milan cathedral. They are some of the most spectacular limestone caves you are every likely to visit.
