The Lake Maggiore region

GPS : Lat: 46 ° 02 '18 "NORD Long 08 ° 44'34 "EST 21010 - MACCAGNO (VA) Via

Lake Maggiore, repository of the wealth and cultural patrimony left by the Borromeo family, is still testimony to their prestige and refinement which can be seen in their magnificent island palazzi with their impressive Italian gardens, and the imposing Fortress of Angera.

The lake should be seen from the lake, and from the lake time seems to have stood still. The Monastery of Santa Caterina clinging to the rocky cliff; Stresa and the Borromeo Islands, small in size but rich in history, and the Castles of Cannero, island outpost of the Mazzarditi Brothers, infamous pirates of the Verbano, are just a few of the timeless examples awaiting the visitor.

Warm summers and mild winters give these southern lakesides a gorgeously fragrant covering of azaleas, oleanders, citrus and olive trees. Exotic lush green gardens dotted with palm trees shade the water's edge. Lake Maggiore is the principal lake, all dramatically beautiful and distinctively Italian but each has its own inbuilt originality and charm.

The crystal clear waters of Lake Maggiore are jade green to the north and a deep blue to the south. The famous Isole Borromee – a cluster of delightful small islands – boasts a barouque palace, romantic terraced gardens of rare plants, fountains, peacocks and statues all set in an amazing landscape, towered over by blue mountains. Facing these islands is the wide promenade of Stresa, busy with boat trips to all parts of the lake. For a panoramic view of the lake and mountains, take the cable car up to the 1491 m Mount Mottarone. Along the western shore, the tranquil resorts of Baveno, Pallanza and Cannobio are unspoilt, peaceful and delightfully decked with flowers. For garden lovers, the Villa Taranto is a renowned haven for azaleas, heathers, rhododendrons, camellias, dahlias and maples. While on the eastern side, from Lavena Mombello a cable-car will take you to the summit of the Sasso del Ferrro mountain, so high that the entire lake district is spread out before you - a great way to start and plan your exploration of these lakes or maybe to save until your last day here - a spectacular conclusion to a memorable holiday.

Thanks to its magnificent location, Maccagno is one of the pearls of Lake Maggiore.

On one side of it there is the lake, on the other green valleys. While only little more than two thousand people live here, the town spans a large surface, all the way to Lago Delio.

The Giona River splits the town in two halves – Maccagno Superiore and Maccagno Inferiore, which originated from the merging of the five comuni that originally occupied this territory.

The eight fractions in which the town is divided add value and make it dynamic, while maintaining its unique characteristics.

There are many paths you can use to hike through the valleys above Maccagno, choosing them based on their level of difficulty . Bears and wolves used to live in this area, while today it's possible to meet foxes, boars, squirrels, hares, beech-martens, badgers, and dormice. Roe deer ? whose population growth has been recently encouraged in the areas surrounding Luino ? and chamois can be easily spotted between 300 and 1600 meters of altitude. If you like to walk in mountain there are an unbelievable number of excursions in Italy and Switzerland

Sailing and Windsurf

Maccagno is located in a very favorable area for sports such as windsurf and sailing - it is, in fact, one of the best sports of all the Maggiore Lake for those sports.

What makes this part of the lake perfect for sailing is the interaction of wind and water currents; as a matter of fact, a very advanced sailing club called "Unione Velica Maccagno" has been active here since 1977.

Mountain Bike

Even if there is no path especially designed for mountain bikes in Maccagno, this area has a lot to offer to this sport's lovers.

Riding the little roads and paths that cross the valleys will give you the chance to enjoy some spectacular sceneries and landscapes.

Pro Loco, in cooperation with Enel (the Italian electric company), organized a competition around the artificial basin of Lago Delio in 2004, and since then it has become an annual appointment for all mountain bike buffs. Pro Loco also sponsors similar events that involve people who love to ride their bikes on unusual paths.

Beach Volley & Skate Board

Beach volley, the modern sport that's becoming very popular, can be played in Parco Giona (Giona Park). To access the facilities (available also after dark) just book a session at the nearby Bar Giona.

You can find a skateboard track in Parco Giona, too. Amministrazione Comunale had it built and validated for official competitions. The access is totally free. A contribution for lighting expenses will be requested for after-dark use.

There are public transportation for daily cruise on Lago Maggiore and bus as well to reach a lot of interesting place..
