And on days you prefer not to play golf, take advantage of your stay with our suggestions for visits around the vineyards, culinary pleasures, wonderful Lyon and walking and cycling in the beautiful green countryside or through some of the many picturesque villages.
In particular you might take the opportunity to visit one of France's top 3 restaurant - Troisgros in Roanne, which has held 3 Michelin stars for over 40 years.

The Rhone / French Alps / Rhone region
The small village La Pacaudière lies in the Loire region (prefecture 42), in the northern part of the Rhone-Alpes, on the spurs of the Monts de la Madeleine. It is close to the regions Auvergne and Saone et Loire (southern Burgundy).
In La Pacaudière you find several convenient stores. There is a very well equipped supermarket, two bakers, a butcher, a pharmacy, a kiosk and 2 cafés. There is also a bank with an ATM and a beautiful little church.
The chateau is beautifully situated, just outside of the village of La Pacaudière. In green surroundings with woods, rivers (including, of course the Loire river) and fields, separated by characteristic hedges and traversed by winding country roads, along which you will find small - sometimes medieval - picturesque villages, with their kind inhabitants.
À la campagne (in the country) but with the city life close by (Lyon, Roanne, Vichy, St. Etienne, Clermont Ferrand). A relatively unknown part of France, bordering on France’s culinary heart.
This is a region well known for its pure air. A region you must experience and a fine place to stay for a holiday. Ideal for walking, cycling and playing golf.
In the winter time there are good facilities nearby for snowboarding and Nordic or alpine skiing.
Roanne is the nearest town and counts +40.000 inhabitants. It has a nice shopping area; a railway station; a hospital, museums and (movie) theatres. With respect to the culinary arts, Roanne is well known, of course, for the famous and celebrated top restaurant Troisgros. This restaurant has held 3 Michelin stars - without interruption - for over 40 years. But there are many more attractive restaurants.
With the annual culinary festival Roanne Table Ouvert, Roanne and its neighbouring villages underline their culinary role.
Lyon - at approximately 1h30 drive, is - although the second largest city in France - also considered to be one of France’s best kept secrets. This splendid historical city has very much to offer, in all kinds of areas: art and culture, architecture, cuisine, antiques, and many, many shops. Lyon also has an international airport and a TGV railway station.
Whether you are an expert or not (even if you are just about to discover the world of wines), if you enjoy wine you will find many opportunities near the chateau. For example, visit the little known but wonderful vineyards of Rhone-Côte Roannais and discover the Vins de la Côte Roannaise. The Côte Roannais are situated just a few miles away from La Pacadière. The red wines en rosé wines have their own Appallation Controlée. These wines are made from the Gamay grapes, called Saint Romain. October and November are ideal to see the picking of the grapes and to visit some wine festivals.
Better known, of course, is the Beaujolais. This wine region - on approximately 1h drive, produces all kinds of wines. From beautiful and special Cru’s to the Beaujolais Primeur, the wine of the latest vintage which is traditionally presented in the third week of November.
The burgundy wine region is also nearby. The burgundy wines are famous and loved all over the world. A ‘Route de vins’ through the vineyards of the Bourgogne will definitely make a pleasant memory. Enjoy the landscapes and the marvelous views and visit some of the many Burgundy wine chateaus to taste some of the best wines of the world. We also suggest to take the possibility to visit Beaune. It really is worth while.
Take full advantage of your stay with our suggestions for visits around the vineyards, culinary pleasures, golf and more.
Walking and cycling With the changing of every season the hues and colours vary constantly. The best way to experience and to enjoy this colourful area is during a walking or cycling-trip across all the different landscapes this area has to offer. La Pacaudière lies on the spurs of the Monts de la Madeleine. In these hills there are many walking routes. You can also walk through the neighbouring Roannais and the Monts du Beaujolais. There are numerous possibilities. Most of these routes are suitable for cycling and mountain biking as well. At the tourist information office in La Pacaudière special maps and guides are available.
Lyon area
Golf When you love playing golf it is a marvellous opportunity to play on the 18-holes court of Céron. It’s only 10 miles away from the chateau. At 20 miles from the chateau you can play the 9-hole course of Villerest.
Nordic and alpine skiing Nearby there are good conditions for Nordic skiing (langlaufen), for example in the Monts de la Madeleine or the Montagne Bourbonnaise. For the more trained Nordic skiers we recommend the pistes of Lavoine (35 miles). Alpine skiing; snowboarding and mountain boarding is already possible in La Loge des Gardes only 20 miles from the chateau. This skiing area is situated on the top of the Montagne Bourbonnaise and has a blue, a green and 2 red pistes. Chalmazel is somewhat further away (1h15).
Tennis On the Camping of La Pacaudière (5 minutes walking from the Chateau) there is a tennis court.
Further details indoors: When you drive through the gate, entering our domain and viewing the Chateau les Bardants you immediately experience and enjoy the typical French atmosphere. Beside the chateau are some side buildings; including three horse stables, a small tower and an old farmstead. Behind these buildings the heated swimming pool is situated of which you will have exclusive use.
The chateau still has its original decorations. The high ceilings, beautiful old parquet floors and authentic mosaic floors, the marble painted walls, the antique fireplaces and the ancient staircases make our chateau a most charming place to stay. We have succeeded in combining these old French style elements with the modern comfort of today.
The beautifully decorated hall gives access to the salon and the dining room. The dining room has an old French table (4m) with 12 comfortable arm chairs. Both the dining room and the salon have large antique fireplaces. The hall also gives access to the stair-well. Impressive staircases of sandstone lead to the cellar and the first floor.
Our kitchen is well equipped. If you enjoy cooking, you can indulge yourself to your heart’s content. Surrounded by the regions Bourgogne, Auvergne and Lyonnais, in the chateau you will find yourself in the culinary heart of France. With the typical products of these regions (Charollais beef, a variety of cheeses, great wines, etc.) you can make the most delicious meals. Of course there is a dishwasher in the kitchen. If you prefer to have your dinner catered we are happy to help you organizing this. There is even a Nespresso machine, so you can make your own superb espresso. Note that special Nespresso coffee cups are needed.
The stylishly decorated sitting room is a large, pleasant room. The bright daylight comes in through the high windows. The beautiful authentic parquet floor, the antique fireplace; the ornamented mirror and the antique piano create a fine and romantic ambiance one would expect in a chateau. It’s a nice place to read a book, to converse over a glass of wine and enjoy the fire.
On the first floor you will find 5 double bedrooms and 2 newly built bathrooms. Some of the bedrooms have a cabinet; a small closet with warm and cold water.
On the main floor you will find the 6th bedroom with adjoining bathroom. Next to this 3rd bathroom there is a separate toilet.
Most of the bedrooms have marble fireplaces. All beds are high quality luxury box spring beds (2007). Each of the rooms has it’s own specific character so everyone may find one to their taste. The new bathrooms were built in the spring of 2007 and are furnished with luxurious design sanitary (Philipe Starck X-line), Dornbracht taps and relaxing rain showers.
The house is a comfortable and charming chateau, sleeping up to 12 (additional beds can be arranged). It is set in a nice 20 acre park of grass and woodland. It is delightful to wander through the garden with its lovely views and beautiful old trees. There are many nice spots where you can read a book, have fine conversations, bring back memories, enjoy a delicious French wine or just be by yourself for a while.
It is available for holidays all year round, each season offering its own special delights. Besides being a perfect venue for a chateau holiday for a number of families or couples, the chateau lends itself as a venue for small business meetings, private gatherings, courses and workshops.
The chateau is equipped with everything you might need, such as a stereo/CD player, a television and DVD/MP3 player, a washing machine, a steam iron and ironing board.
In the kitchen you will find two ovens and a dishwasher. There are splendid knifes, a Magimix foodprocessor and an extensive set of first class professional SIGG cookware. There is no fixed internet station but you can access the internet with your laptop through WIFI (wireless).
Further details outdoors: The heated swimming pool is located between the side buildings and offers full privacy. At the pool there are sun loungers and umbrellas. At one side of the pool there is a big roofed terrace. On hot days, it is nice to enjoy your French lunch here or just to sit in the shadow for a while. On summer evenings it is a nice spot too, for instance with a BBQ. The swimming pool can be heated. So it is possible to swim from the early spring until the late autumn.
