The Rhone/French Alps region
Lyon, capital of the gastronomy and patrimony of UNESCO, is extremely rich in its history, diversity, geographical location and architecture. In minutes, one can pass from Roman ruins, admire the Medieval cathedral, explore the Renaissance traboules, visit the art museum in an 18th century convent, buy your meal on the open-air market on the Saône, or at the famous Halles de Paul Bocuse in the Part-Dieu where modern skyscrapers overlook the city.
For longer stays, you can imagine day visits to Vienne and the Côte de Rhône wines to the south, east to Annecy and the Savoyard wines and cheeses in the Alpes, north east to Bourg (and the magnificent convent at Brou) and the Bressane cooking, Beaujeu and the Beaujolais wines in the north, or even to the west near Clermont-Ferrand and the divers offers of the Massif Centrale.
Culturally rich, Lyon offers several festivals in addition to the full regular seasons of symphony concerts with the Orchestre National de Lyon, opera with the Opera National de Lyon, dance at the Maison de la Danse, and theater with a wide choice of theaters.
In matters of festivals, the biggest is the Light Festival, four days of amazing demonstrations of light designs and shows throughout the city, always held around December 8.
During the summer, the antique theater at Fourvière holds a festival providing a diversity of artists. There are also jazz festivals in Vienne, Rive de Gier, Bron, etc. Or the Nuits Sonores, festival dedicated to electro music.
If you never came to Lyon, you will be surprised seeing this city which extends over the heights which we call the district of the Croix Rousse, moreover the inhabitants of Lyon differentiate Lyon in the Croix Rousse: we are of Lyon or croixroussiens! You also have the rise(ascent) of Fourvière dominated by the Basilica, and not far the ruins with the amphitheater(lecture hall) where happens every summer of the welcoming concerts approximately 5000 people. The key point of this city is the big park of the golden head, a treasure in the city. Markets on the edges of the Saône and the Rhône also are not to be forgotten because they are really typical. The peninsula going of the Place(Square) of the Opera up to the Place(Square) Carnot offers you a very pleasant walking(step) in this pedestrian street. The Place(Square) Bellecourt situated in put path(way) between the Place(Square) of the Opera and the place(square) Carnot, is grand! Old inescapable(major) Lyon with its cathedral and its traboules, small passages from a street to the other one typically Lyonnais(inhabitant of Lyon, inhabitants of Lyon).
