The Rhone/French Alps region
The Beaujolais region lies between the Mâconnais to the north, and to the south the city of Lyon, with the Rhône valley beyond. It is an intensely pretty region, with rolling hills and extinct volcanoes in the north, and flatter land in the south. The wines are mainly red, made from the Gamay grape, which though nothing special in most parts of the world, really comes into its own on the granitic soils here.
Located in the heart of France, this is a rural idyll of old villages, vineyards, lush farmland, forest and gentle hills, where the graceful Saône and Rhône rivers merge. At its core is the chic metropolis of Lyon, former capital of the silk industry and the first stop on any self-respecting gourmand's grand tour. A bright firmament of Michelin-starred restaurants offer gourmet tables overflowing with fine Burgundy and some of the best cuisine in France. Horse riding, ballooning and cycling will let you savour the rich landscape of Beaujolais, and even burn off a few calories after a night of gastronomic indulgence!
Legend has it that Beaujolais' peaks were created by the giant Gargantua, emptying his shoes of troublesome stones (or drunkenly lobbing them, depending on who tells the story). Pick your way among them as you follow the wine route through the region, visiting the villages of Beujeu, Brouilly, Chénas, Saint-Amour, Fleurie, Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent.
The Roman city of Lyon just thirty minutes drive and known for its silk industry and gastronomy boasts two rivers, two cathedrals and an amphitheatre. It has much to offer with sophisticated shopping, history, cultural activities, museums and riverside markets.
Charnay is conveniently located just ten minutes from the A6 motorway( autoroute du soleil) a seven hour drive from Calais and forty five minutes from Saint Exupery airport.
The Beaujolais region known mainly for its wine outside France is much loved by the French for its abundance of outdoor pursuits such as hiking, horse riding and cycling in beautiful and unspoilt countryside and offers much to the holidaymaker who wants both tranquility and calm but with activities and gastronomy close by.
Within walking distance is Bruno's goat farm where fresh cheese can be bought daily from the dairy and also several Caveau where local wine can be sampled and purchased. There are two Michelin starred restaurants in nearby villages and numerous Buchon ( brasseries) in Lyon to enjoy famous regional cuisine.
