The West Country / Devon region
There are few places in Britain that can lay claim to such a wondeful combination of stunning landscapes, a coastline of spectacular cliffs, secret coves and golden beaches together with a hinterland of wildmoorland, sparkling river valleys and lush rolling hills. All these combine to make North Devon and Exmoor a very special place to stay.
Much of the North Devon coastline is designated as an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty and many of the remote cliffs and cliff-top grasslands are ecological sites, with many Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The dunes of Braunton Burrows are a National Nature Reserve with many rare fauna to be found there.
Lynton area
Lynton is a good central base to explore the surrounding area. Known as "England's Little Switzerland" Lynton has been a sought after holiday destination since Victorian times (when only the rich and famous could afford to reach it due to the rugged and steep routes into the town!) Lynton is set on cliffs 600 feet above Lynmouth which is at sea level. The towns are connected by (a very steep) road but also by a water-powered railway.
There are many local shops and restaurants within the village of Lynton itself and also in nearby Lynmouth with many more to be found along the coast in either direction. Exmoor National Park is on the doorstep, with it's quaint and old fashioned towns and villages and breathtaking scenery.
The diversity of natural landscape provides an enormous variety of opportunities for outdoor activities such as: Walking, Horse-riding, Golf, Surfing, Fishing, Windsurfing, Sailing, Boat trips, Golf.
There is a wealth of other attractions and places of interest to visit, including:
Days out for children - Theme Parks, Wildlife, Dinosaurs, Gnomes, Butterflies, Diggers and Castles!
Local markets - with their variety of food, drink, arts and crafts.
Beaches - the extensive surf washed golden sands of Westward Ho!, Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde and Saunton are amongst the finest beaches in Europe. Sheltered by cliffs or sand dunes and studded with fascinating rock pools they make an ideal centrepiece for pure relaxation or watersports holidays.
Historic houses - including The National Trust House at Arlington, Tapeley Park and Dunster Castle.
Gardens - RHS Rosemoor Gardens, Dr. Smarts beautiful garden at Marwood, National Trust Knighthayes Court house and gardens.
In fact there is so much to see and do, one holiday is not enough and we are sure that you will want to keep coming back to North Devon year after year to enjoy all that is on offer.
