The West Country / Devon region

North Devon is a truly beautiful part of the world. Characterised by its high cliffs and hills, this is great for the ramblers among you. Put on your walking boots and discover the inner wilderness of Exmoor where deer and ponies roam wild. If walking is not your thing then you can have a go at mountain biking, spend a day fishing for salmon or trout or explore the quaint towns and villages that abound in this charming region of Britain.
There are plenty of ideas for family days out - try Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Tropiquaria, The Milky Way Adventure Park or Ilfracombe Aquarium for starters! Older children are bound to love quadbiking at Keypitts Quads.
All in all there really is something for everyone!
The Lynton / Lynmouth area
Whether you are after an action packed, outdoor bound holiday or just a relaxing break, then Lynton and Lynmouth has something to offer you.
You can soak up some sun on beaches such as Croyde Bay (or if you're feeling brave then try your hand at surfing!). Or explore Exmoor on horseback - this is one of the most enjoyable ways to see the area. There are plenty of riding stables in the area that cater for all abilities.Golfers can take their pick from courses in Ilfracombe or Willingcott Valley. Cycles can be hired locally
If you're not feeling quite so energetic then fill up your tank and explore the local area by car. You'd be hard pushed not to enjoy a morning in the tearooms of Lynton sampling the local fare! Out of the town you'll come across the intrriguing Valley of the Rocks where you can spot buzzards and wild, yet docile, goats!
Just below Lynton lies Lynmouth (the two are linked by a water-powered cliff railway), which is crammed full of charming fishermen's cottafes. Take a leisurely stroll round and don't forget to stop for a cream tea!
There are some beautiful gardens in the area, such as RHS Rosemoor, Marwood Hill and the stunning Heddon Hall. Lovers of historic properties are also in luck, with houses such as Hartland Abbey and Arlington Court out there to be visited.

We stayed here for 4 nights in early September as a little extra short break before my daughter went back to school. We all agreed we'd enjoyed this much more than our holiday to France in the Summer! The accommodation is full of character and very comfortable and clean. Everything you could possibly need is supplied and what can I say about the views over the Bristol channel! My daughter loved sitting on the bedroom window seat with her book and every time we looked out we saw something different. We were kindly allowed to bring our little dog who is 7 months old and he loved it here too. He slept in his bed in the kitchen and was very cosy in there. We were delighted to be greeted with a lovely cream tea for our arrival and we enjoyed the bottle of sparkling wine in the evening while we relaxed on the sofa. We loved Lynton and Lynmouth and can particularly recommend the Esplanade Fish Bar, The Oak Room Restaurant where we had a fabulous meal, The Fox & Goose at Parracombe where we had an outstanding Sunday lunch and the Crown Pub across the road where we enjoyed a meal on our last night with a great pub atmosphere and friendly service. We were able to take the dog into lots of pubs while we ate which was great and he was welcomed in lots of the shops too so he loved all the fuss. We found everyone aroudn extremely helpful and friendly. We would thoroughly recommend this accommodation - we all felt relaxed and refreshed and there is a lot to see and do in the local area and we would definitely love to return and when we do I would certainly want to stay here again. |
