The West Country region
Rousdon can be found sitting on the borders of Devon and Dorset and although quiet and private is close to many popular attractions and quaint villages and towns. Being part of the Jurassic Coast (and a World Heritage Site) there are many opportunities to go fossil-hunting at Lyme Regis (which is also home to Dinosaurland) and Charmouth.
Axminster is about a 15 minute drive away, home to TVs River Cottage, and also offers a sports complex with a swimming pool and other facilities. It is a wonderful area to explore on foot along the West Coast pathway
Go fishing and see the quarry caves in Beer; see the forge in Branscombe; travel the tram at Seaton; visit Jacob's Ladder beach at Sidmouth; grab a cream tea or pub lunch almost anywhere!
Rousdon is one of the smallest parishes in England. There is a social club just outside the main gates of the estate and a small general shop and garage. The Dower House hotel is a minute in the other direction has a bar and restaurant and the Orchard Hotel is opposite the main gates.
Charton Bay is the beach (exclusive to the estate) and access is via a steep, cliff top path (weather permitting) which may not be suitable for the infirm or very young. The public beaches of Lyme Regis and Seaton are within a few miles.

"Truly beautiful house and wonderful stay"
A group of 10 friends and I rented Middlemist for 5 days over the New Year weekend. GoodAbsolutely stunning property. The photos are accurate and each bedroom is unique. Large, comfortable living room… More
Apologies for the house being dusty, unfortunately (and unusually) at Xmas our housekeeper was on her own and it's a large house to get ready in just a few hours for the following party. Plus there seem to be many more spiders around this year!! Thank you for letting us know, we will be mindful of this in the future.
Also, for future guests information - the house is advertised as sleeping 8 which it does comfortably, the sofa bed is used on the odd occasion that there is a party of 10 and we do make it clear that it is in the lounge of the bedroom that is galleried (the video on the website makes it even clearer); and our guest is right, the house is not suitable for certain disabled guests and is not advertised as such, especially for those in wheelchairs and/or with walking problems due to the cobbles; stone stairs up to the house and steps and stairs within the house. We wish this was not the case but it is!
