The West Country region
Dorset is a county of great beauty, a land of contrast and breathtaking scenery. It is one of the maritime counties of southern England, fronting the English Channel which separates the United Kingdom from mainland Europe. Its coastline extends some 140 kilometres from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east, and offers a selection of the finest sandy beaches to be found in the British Isles.
The award winning heritage coast begins in Poole Harbour (experts debate whether this is actually the world's
largest natural harbour), and includes the Purbeck coastline which is the site of special nature reserves and
countryside/marine parks. Travelling westwards, equally spectacular is the Chesil Bank, a barren pebbled beach, stretching 25 kilometres from Weymouth to Bridport. This, with the internationally famous Abbotsbury Swannery, is a photographer's paradise, and a sea captain's nightmare!
Dorset is frequently described as 'The Best of Both Worlds', for behind the varied coastline lies a county rich in archaeology, unspoilt rural villages and countryside, and a history to be proud of. From before Roman times, Dorset has been a jewel in England's crown, and the evidence of forefathers is plentiful.
Dorset's topography is varied. In the east, most land is low lying, with extensive heathland. The centre of Dorset is chalk downland, with extensive rivers and streams, leading to the west of Dorset which is more hilly, with a rich landscape of woodland and small fields.
This coastline is England’s first natural World Heritage Site and Lyme Regis is an ideal base from which to explore its diverse geology and abundant wildlife. Lyme Regis sits at the heart of the spectacular and dramatic Jurassic Coast.
The unique and captivating charms of Lyme Regis have been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. A busy trading centre in Medieval times and one of the most important ports on the south coast in Tudor times, the town became a popular sea spa in the 18th century attracting Royalty and inspiring poets, writers and painters.
The River Lym, from which the town takes its name, winds lazily through the maze of narrow streets and shops and as you wander through the town you will find traditional pubs and tea rooms, modern restaurants, galleries and historic buildings. Turner and Whistler both painted here and Jane Austen wrote Persuasion after her visit in the early 1800’s. More recently the town featured in John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

"A fantastic house with amazing gardens"
The house is in a truly beautiful setting in the village of Uplyme and it is ideally located being a short walk via a footpath along the river to the lovely town of Lyme Regis. The house is very spacious is full of character and has a lovely feel to it. It is ideal for large groups as it is extremely well equiped and can easily accomodate 18 people.
The gardens are amazing and great for exploring. We would definitely come back.

"A great house for a family party"
We stayed as a family party of 15. The house had plenty of room and was warm and comfortable. Great kitchen and dining area, and the house was brilliant for hide and seek. The weather was appalling but we were able to explore the very unusual garden and the walk to Lyme was interesting and good exercise. The housekeeper was very helpful and we found the house in excellent order when we arrived. It is a great location for a large group to have a vacation. We would certainly go again.

"A lovely house for a group holiday"
Pitt White House is a large house suitable for a group like ours - 3 families, all friends, going away together every year. It has a big kitchen and a big table where we can all sit around and eat together. There is also a big table outdoors on the patio, overlooking the garden. Tastefully furnished and in a good state of decoration. Several ground floor rooms provide a place for different people to be doing different things - reading or studying for our children for example. We are going back this year.

"Brilliant house for large groups and dogs"
Went here for parents 50th wedding anniversary. A large group with 4 dogs. It was the start of the hot weather so we spent most of the time in the garden The house is like a home so you feel relaxed , it is spacious so you have plenty of room, and so well equipped with 2 dishwashers , a range a cooker and so many cookery books it was shame we were only there for a long weekend. Any problems we had were promptly sorted by the housekeeper. We went in to Lyme but it was so hot all we wanted was to get back and relax in the garden , with the kids and dogs occupied in the stream at the bottom. A great place we all had a brilliant time

"Disappointing as property has great potential if certain areas were attended to."
Location is great.Kitchen was well appointed. Some bathrooms had water supply issues and some needed hooks. Some mattresses had were of poor quality for a property of this nature.I do not believe it wo… More
Nice to know that the property is in a great location, the kitchen well appointed and the housekeeper helpful and on hand to deal with problems. However, the negative issues raised could of been dealt with had this reviewer contacted the owner either during or after their holiday. We welcome feedback from our guests and would like to know which mattresses they found uncomfortable? Which bathrooms had water supply issues? The website details of the garden describes the stream with pictures and does state clearly that young children will need supervision. Many families have returned to Pitt White House over the last 10 years because they love the garden, adults for its south facing secluded aspect and the children find it an adventure with space to camp and play. Future guests can be assured that comments will be noted and standards maintaned.

"house and garden very spacious and comfortable"
Arrived to a spotless house. Very roomy indoors and spacious garden, plenty of room for children to play, in fact they would have been happy to stay there without leaving the property!
Pleasant walk following stream to Lyme Regis approx. 20 mins. almost level all the way.
Plenty of good quality equipment in the kitchen to help with self-catering and the Aga was a bonus.
There are enough attractions in the surrounding area to keep all ages happy.
This was our 2nd. visit and we all look forward to a third next year.
