The Dorset region
There are so many things to do in Dorset if you are wondering where to go and what to do in Dorset, here are some ideas to help you explore, enjoy and make the most of this county.
The magnificent Dorset coastline, together with the outstanding natural beauty of the unspoilt countryside makes this county a very special place to come and explore.
Discover the breathtaking Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, stretching for 95 miles from neighbouring East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset. There is so much to do along this stunning coastline, which is world famous for fossil hunting. There are wonderful views for walkers on the South West Coast Path National Trail, or you can simply enjoy the spectacular scenery on a gentle coastal cruise.
Away from the coast you will find miles and miles of rolling countryside sprinkled with charming villages and fascinating market towns. Almost all of Dorset's countryside is protected and is home to a huge diversity of wildlife in downlands, tranquil river valleys, water meadows, woodlands and colourful heathlands.
It is no wonder that the area has captivated film and TV makers from all over the world. Productions of all kinds have been filmed on location here, with Dorset's unspoilt countryside, dramatic coastline and spectacular historic houses and gardens being used as a backdrop to the action.
Situated in the South West of Dorset, The West Country, England, UK, Lyme Regis is an historic unspoiled seaside resort and fishing port on the world famous Cobb harbour. Surrounded by beautiful coastlines and countryside, the area has now been awarded World Heritage Site Status; famous for its geology and fossil finds.
Lyme Regis boasts breathtaking scenery and a special mystique, making it a sparkling resort for all seasons. Its historic Cobb and harbour are iconic features, set against moody blue cliffs yielding fossilised evidence of life on earth millions of years ago.
Situated at the heart of the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis is a major centre for fossil collecting, recognised and acclaimed worldwide.
Famously depicted in the film version of John Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman and Jane Austen's Persuasion, the resort's unique appeal wins her a deserved accolade as the Pearl of the Dorset coast - a gem in the West Country's holiday playground.
Lyme Regis draws people from all over the globe, many of whom return year after year to relive memorable holidays and to enjoy a varied programme of novel events and activities, including art and music festivals. The variety and extent of the available entertainment is boosted by the fact that Lyme Regis is believed to be the smallest town in the country to have its own thriving cinema and theatre. Whatever the weather, Lyme is always the place to be.
Lyme Regis is a traditional and stylish English seaside destination with both a sandy and separate pebble beach, beach huts and cob harbour. The children will love the safe water and beautiful sands of Front Beach and Cobb Gate beach that are perfect for sandcastle building.
Lymeâ??s beautiful, sheltered, south-facing beaches have recently benefited from a coastal protection scheme. Completed in 2007 the scheme has provided easier access and a larger beach area. An award winning environmental scheme has ensured Lyme has safe and clean bathing waters.
Along the seafront, newly landscaped gardens provide the ideal spot to laze away the day, relaxing and enjoying the stunning views.
Today Lyme Regis is a hub of activity with year round locally organised events including the famous Jazz Festival, Carnival & Regatta Week and Lifeboat Week.
This bustling seaside resort offers a wide choice of all year round holiday activities for everyone; beach days, watersports, coastal walks, fishing trips, cycling or fossil hunting. The choice is yours!

"Lovely flat in a great location."
Flat 2 Buckfields was a lovely flat and very well equipped for our stay. Unfortunately, we were poorly and the weather was terrible, but we were lucky that the flat had books/dvds to entertain us and was a nice environment to stay in. The only negative was there was some damp in the master bedroom which needs to be rectified. However, we would stay again if going to the area.
Thanks for your review. This damp issue has now been rectified.
