The West Country / Dorset region
Devon and Dorset is the home of the ‘British Riviera’ – Torquay, Lime Regis and Brixham offer traditional seaside breaks complete with tearooms, arcades and the local speciality of clotted cream and scones. As well as award winning beaches and rolling countryside Devon’s dramatic coastline and sleepy rural villages such as Axminster offer a unique vantage point to explore this wonderful English county.
Lyme Regis area
Axminster is situated overlooking the river Axe and is very close to the wonderful British Riviera town of Lyme Regis. Lyme Regis is famed for its stunning beaches and excellent coastal walks. Nicknamed the 'Pearl of Dorset.' this pretty coastal town has a beautiful harbour locally known as 'The Cobb.' which was the setting for John Fowles novel ' The French Lieutenant's Woman' later an adaptation of the novel was filmed in Lyme Regis.
Lyme Regis is also known for its fossils along the Jurassic Coast, which has now been given World Heritage status. In Lyme Regis there are lots of good restaurants and throughout the year there are many events to go and see such as: Life boat week, Carnival week, Civil war re-enactments, music festivals and The Marine Theatre.
