2 miles south-west of Lydford and 1 from its gorge, 400 yards of private farm-lane end at Burnville Farm, a lovely farmstead amid beech trees. It is on the side of a shallow stream-valley with supreme views of Dartmoor hills and tors and to Brentor�s peak-top church, from almost anywhere on the 250 acre working farm (direct moor access from it). There are sheep, cattle, ponies, pigs, chickens, ornamental pheasants. You can roam the farm and help is most welcome. Stabling/grazing for your own ponies/horses; a pond (picnicking) with mallard, moorhen and usually Canada geese in spring; badgers and foxes about. Clay pigeon shootingand instruction, archery tuition (equipment provided) and mountain bikes (adults� and children�s) by arrangement. Fenced outdoor heated swimming pool (32� x 16� and 3�6" to 8� deep, available 22 May to 12 September) and hard tennis court shared with owners. Fun badminton and volleyball. Games room (6� pool table, table tennis, skittle alley) and well-equipped gym in a refurbished barn. Lovely walled vegetable garden; fresh veg available in season, and eggs. Meals available in the owners' house. Golf and gliding, 2 miles.

For you to stay in are the original stone farmhouse (A121) or a large Victorian house (A122) 200 yards up the private lane, a converted coachhouse (A120) roughly midway between the two, or a converted barn (A51) a mile away. The extremely nice owners live nearby but out of sight and do B&B in their own house.

... the large Victorian house, called Guinea, has superb Dartmoor views from most windows. Two hundred yards from the farmhouse, farm buildings and owners� house, it stands above and set back from the private lane, with the lawn in front and gravelled patio (table/chairs, brick barbecue) and another lawn behind � all enclosed; you share the outdoor swimming pool, games room and gym, tennis court and all other facilities at the farm. Inside, very spacious with high ceilings, fine arched doors. Porch; depth-of-house living room (open fire, TV/DVD) with windows both ends; pretty dining room with antique table seating 8 (intimately) and large toy box; big, well-equipped fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer) with dining/breakfast table seating 10, back door and porch to garden; downstairs bathroom (suite) and shower-room (suite); washing machine, tumble drier in back hall. Upstairs, five bedrooms � two double (both with moor views, one with 5' bed), a twin (washbasin, garden views), and two with 3' bunks (garden/countryside views); bathroom (suite plus hand-shower).Tremendous atmosphere, freedom and number of things for adults and children to do, and the houses are much praised. Sumptuous evening meal menu. Outdoor swimming pool available 22 May to 12 September.

About this location

The Devon region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you�re at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field �oases�. The moor�s eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) � two of them rise in the moor�s middle and join at Dartmeet � is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor�s most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Lydford

Lydford: village (two good food pubs, farm shop, church) on Dartmoor�s western edge, famous for its gorge/waterfall (Nat. Trust, very beautiful walk deep in woods). Trout fishing in the Lyd; riding stables locally. Sea/beaches, about 25 miles, north or south coasts. Roadford Lake, 9 miles. Tavistock, 5. Brentor�s tor-top church, 3.
