The Rutland region

Unspoilt and charming, Rutland is England’s smallest county. With it’s historic market towns, gentle rolling hills and quintessential English villages it really is the place to relax and get away from it all.

Explore Oakham, Uppingham and nearby Stamford three of the prettiest towns in the Midlands.

Small is beautiful, and certainly Rutland lives up to this maxim. Rutland County measures just sixteen miles square in area, where the countryside has little changed since medieval times, apart from the vast, Rutland Water reservoir.

Rutland was first recognised as an official Shire County in the 12th Century, although its history goes back much further. Many of the town and village names date back to the early Anglo Saxon period around the 7th Century.

Rutland is a little piece of old England, hidden away in the very heart of England. It's a place where Kings once hunted deer in the valleys, where tiny villages were bequeathed to Mercian Queens and where charming thatched cottages, ancient churches and fine Georgian architecture are all reminiscent of a bygone age.

Lyddington

The 1970's was a most turbulent time in Rutland's modern history. Not only did the county endure a dramatic change of landscape, but against its will it was also merged with Leicestershire, despite much opposition from the local inhabitants. However, Rutlander's independent spirit prevailed, and in 1997 Rutland regained it's status as a separate English County and today remains one of the most charming rural areas in Britain.

The charming village of Lyddington was once an ancient track that carried horse-drawn traffic. In the middle of the 18th-century, a new turnpike road was opened, blessedly leaving the track in peace so that today the long main street of lovely mellow ironstone properties from the 17th and 18th-centuries is not plagued with the bustle of traffic.

Set in the lush greenery of the Welland Valley, this quiet backwater has one of the few remaining Wildlife Sites on the River Welland. The site, owned by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, is small but extremely valuable. It shows a rich variety of wild meadow plants, including; great burnet, meadow buttercup, meadow foxtail, quaking grass, and many others.

In the Middle Ages Lyddington was a very important place for it remains the only place in the tiny county of Rutland where a great palace was built. The palace was used as a home for the Bishops of Lincoln, the site chosen was next to the church of St.Andrew, both still play an important role in village life. Lyddington Bede House has a chequered history, it was confiscated during the Reformation, been pillaged for its stone, turned into almshouses by Lord Burghley, and now it has been fully restored by English Heritage.

The house is exceptional, in that for the period it has windows along the one side of the great hall (20ft wide x 47ft long) it also has intricate cornices, below which the stone walls would have been hung with lavish drapes. Interestingly, it was Queen Elizabeth I who gifted the palace to the Cecil family who where responsible for turning it into Bede House.

"Comfortable, well appointed cottage in beautiful surroundings."

I had reservations about using Rutland Cottages, Corby initially as a result of reading negative reviews online, however these are from way back and I need to start this review by saying DO NOT BE PUT OFF - THEY ARE UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT and we found all aspects of our dealings with them to be ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT! No security deposit was requested. All emails/text messages were answered promptly and efficiently whatever time of day they were sent and the level of service we received was brilliant. We are a family of two adults and 4 children (age 9 months to 10 years) and initially enquired about Wysteria Cottage, however, Wishing Well Cottage, Lyddington was recommended by Sarah as being more suited to our family needs as it was more spacious, so we booked that for a week and arrived on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May 2013. What a gorgeous cottage! Not ‘cottagey’ at all in its spaciousness … high ceilings, large rooms, lots of windows, this clever cottage felt cosy, light and spacious all at the same time. Loads of character with original features, wooden floors, beams, tiles … ample room for all 6 of us to spread out and make ourselves at home and home from home it really was. There’s everything you need here (apart from a hairdryer!) The kitchen’s cleverly designed with dishwasher, washer/dryer, microwave, oven, hob, large fridge, half freezer (more than large enough for a week’s worth of frozen food), iron, ironing board, clothes airer etc. The bathroom’s got a fabulous shower and fantastic spa bath (with amazing water pressure so it fills up in a flash!). All linen was supplied – soft fluffy towels in abundance, bedding – so fresh and clean … we slept really well here (the beds were more comfy than ours at home!) Only a couple of negatives (or positives, depending how you look at it!) we struggled to get wifi connection and couldn’t get a mobile phone signal at all within the house (we got it sporadically in the village) and yes the paintwork could do with a freshen up and the living room carpet’s a bit grubby, but none of this detracts from this gem of a cottage, from this brilliant company. I can’t fault them – or indeed recommend them highly enough – would definitely use again and would highly recommend Rutland Cottages and this brilliant area.
