The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region
Bordering the Forest of Dean are the majestic Severn valley and the tranquil Wye valley with its fantastic canoeing and rock climbing centres.
A short distance away are rural Herefordshire with its cider makers at Weston and Hereford, and the Brecon Beacon mountains of Monmouthshire.
Lydbrook area
The Forest of Dean is a little known rural community the a natural forest covering over 100 square miles. There are miles of cycle paths, disused railway tracks, caves, rivers and streams with pretty villages within the forest and the area inspired DennisPotter, J.K.Rowling and Tolkein.
The Dean Heritage Centre provides an insight into the history of the Forest and outdoor play areas with original millpond and weir. Speech House is the original hunting lodge from the 16th Century and the nearby Beechenhurst picnic area has a climbing tower, restaurant and sculpture trail with a large stained-glass window, depicting the forest, hung in the wood! Clearwell caves offer a glimpse of iron working underground and Puzzlewood is the result of ancient scowl working for iron mining. The little coal mine at Hopewell has visitor tour underground. Peddlebikeaway in the centre of the Forest has daily rental of cycles suitable for all, including baby carriages, rear mount seats for infants and small children and mountain bikes for the more adventurous visitor).
There are of course miles of natural woodland which can be enjoyed for free and you may be lucky enough to see the wild deer or wild boar, as well as the squirrels and rabbits. Two bird reserves provide great opportunity for visitors to see woodpeckers and the more shy animals. Natural streams abound in the Forest and there are good picnic sites where the children can safely wade into the water to play whilst in sight of parents and carers.
Canoes can be hired locally to provide the more adventurous activity days out and the river Wye from Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth (or even Chepstow) gives opportunity to enjoy tranquil settings as well as the rapids at Symonds Yat.
There are swimming pools and leisure centres at Five Acres, Cinderford, Lydney, Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth. There are 6 golf courses within 15 minutes drive and championship courses at Celtic Manor (home of the 2010 Ryder Cup) and St Pierre (British Masters on Old Course) within 40 minutes drive.
Great shopping can be found in Bristol, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Hereford. The historic cathedral at Hereford features the famous Mappa Mundi and both Bristol and Gloucester have great dockside attractions with river and canal boats. Bristol also has @Bristol interactive science experience, SS Great Britain and Arnolfini gallery. Theatres are located at Bristol (Hippodrome) and Cheltenham (Everyman). The Royal Forest Theatre at Five Acres, Coleford also has a calendar of events throughout the year.
How to get there
Due to the rural nature of the area, a car is almost essential, although regular buses are available on the main routes from Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye or Monmouth.
