About this location
The Gloucestershire region
The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire is a well know area for nature based activities as well as quiet trips away, giving holidaymakers a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the magnificent surroundings the forest displays. With the historical area of Gloucester with its Roman history just an hours drive away, it is easy to spend a day out here. Gloucester Cathedral being the part of the set for the series of Harry Potter films, it is a beautiful building to look around and with restaurants and a shopping center near by.
With the River Severn estuary close by, The Severn Bore is a spectacular moment to watch. Occurring throughout the year, the wave is the second largest tidal range in the world.
Activities in the forest have grown and developed throughout the years, some historic areas becoming attractions such as Clearwell Caves, an old mining cave. For adrenalin junkies there are many exciting activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, cave explorations and the new Go Ape activity, where you can spend your day up in the trees on a high rope course. There are also many events that are held in the forest and each one is as diffrent as the next. The Wartime Weekend that is held at the end of September is a reflective and fun way to celebrate the areas local history. Bungee Jump Weekend and the Forest Food Showcase let people enjoy themselves and again learn of the culture of the forest... through eating!
The Forest is situated in an ideal location for many more attractions such as easy access to the Roman center Caerleon in Cardiff, as well as Abergavenny a market town in the Brecon Beacons national park. With Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye only a quick drive away you wont be short of shopping or places to visit.
