Our Luxor: Luxury Apartment
Apartment | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 2
The "Our Luxor" Holiday Apartment is the only luxurious "1001 Nights" themed apartment in the whole of Luxor, and what's more it is right in the middle of the old town; the Medina, if you like. A comfortable and romantic oasis after a day of exploring!
"Our Luxor" is also the only English owned and managed B&B in central Luxor. The reason we operate this B&B is mainly because of our desire to help new visitors to Luxor gain the same sort of pleasure from the town, the antiquities and the people that we ourselves have come to enjoy over many years.
Our one bedroom guest apartment accommodates couples with a king-size bed or singles sharing twin beds, and is furnished with beautiful items which have been specially commissioned and hand made, or are antiques which have been collected from far and wide.
Our guests have a completely separate (whole floor) apartment, with a large livingroom in the Ottoman style which is air-conditioned, as is the quiet bedroom, which has an en-suite W.C./shower room plus there is a separate W.C. The lovely kitchen is stocked and fully equipped with all the usual necessities, including a fresh coffee maker. Clothes laundering can be arranged with the owners.
There is a balcony off the livingroom, and guests also have unrestricted access to our roof terrace, with both sunny and shady areas, and inspiring views over Luxor town and of the Theban Hills on the West Bank.
Guests at "Our Luxor" are given an initial (free) walking tour of the locality by the owners, which usually includes introductions to some neighbours and local shopkeepers and traders. The owners are available 24/7; either in person at their apartment (same building) or by telephone (supplied) when either are out and about.
Breakfast on our roof terrace is normally a time of lively conversation regarding the coming day's adventures, between the numerous delicious courses, that is.
"Our Luxor" is less than 200 metres from both the tourist and local bazaars. We're a 10 minute walk to the banks of the mighty River Nile, crossing the newly excavated 2.7 km long "Sphinx Avenue" and passing by the fabulous Luxor Temple on the way. Local shops and restaurants abound!
Our neighbourhood is wholly Egyptian! No other foreigners live nearby and most of our neighbours are Muslim, although the area is known more as a Christian area, with a Christian school for boys very close-by and a new 9000 capacity Coptic Church within 300 metres.
Our nearest main road carries one-way traffic, and 'hail and ride' public service mini-buses travelling Northwards pass the end of our alley, about 15 metres from our building entrance. Buses travelling Southwards pass along another one-way street which is about a three minute walk away. Taxis and horse carriages are readily available almost anywhere and at almost any time.

The Nile River/Valley of the Kings region
Egypt's climate is wonderful, while the Western countries are freezing; Egypt luxuriates in temperatures which are only found during the best of UK summers! Only at night is a light jacket or cardigan sometimes required. Spring and Autumn are just perfect, with hot days and balmy evenings and nights. High summer (July and August) is reserved for serious sun-worshippers, as the daytime temperatures can often exceed 50 degrees Celsius in the shade!
We are in Luxor, which is the stable part of Egypt; whilst Cairo (and other points North and East) have their major political and religious demonstrations, Luxor has a family day out with banner waving and chanting! The people of Luxor just love to celebrate, whether it's a multi-religion feast day, like the Shams El Nessim (Easter Monday) which dates from the Phaoronic celebrations where eggs were decorated, and the Moulid of the Muslim Saint Abu El Haggagg, when there's a three day stick fighting event right outside of our building!
Of course, Luxor is also the place where there are more ancient monuments than you can shake a stick at. Quite literally, within a few minutes of leaving our building, you can be transfixed by the sight of the celebrated "Avenue of the Sphinx's", and its ceremonial "Kebash Road", where the priests and rulers of "Kemet" processed between the Temple of Luxor and the fabulous Temples of Karnak to proclaim their worship of the "old gods" through the prescribed liturgies and rituals.
From our roof-terrace, we can look over the Nile to the Theban Hills, and gaze in wonder at the places where centuries of Egypt's rulers were buried to await their resurrection on the day of judgement, only to be dragged from their sarcophagi by either ancient treasure hunting thieves or by the more modern-day plunderers; the Egyptologists.
Our little area of Luxor is almost the exact centre of the real old town. Although the surrounding streets can look dirty, our neighbours are far from it and uncommonly kind. To the newcomer, these streets can resemble a slum type of "downtown" area (as does ALL of Luxor) but don't be fooled; many of our near neighbours are extremely wealthy. Egyptians don't like to advertise their wealth, and some of the richest people I know could easily be mistaken as being homeless!
There are shops of every description all around us; grocers, barbers, pharmacies, shoe shops, fast food outlets, tourist and local restaurants, clothing retailers, stationers, cobblers, fresh juice bars, blacksmiths, tool shops, coffeeshops. Actually in our building we have a Doctor's clinic, a Surgeon with a small operating room and a Dentist with the most modern equipment!
Whilst almost every street has at least one Mosque, our area is also blessed with a multitude of Christian Churches; we have Coptic, Coptic Catholic, Franciscan, Brethren, Presbyterian, Methodist and all within a 5 minutes walk!
Luxor has two main suqs (traditional style markets) both the local and tourist suqs are three minutes from our building. The main fruit and vegetables market is in the opposite direction, over the railway line, about five minutes away. Luxors little 4 platform Railway Station is only another few minutes stroll, as is the main Tourist Information Office.
