A137 - Stable Corner
from £44 /night help
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
High on the valley-side 3 miles (by car) north-east of Lustleigh, 200 yards of private drive from the public lane and about 1 mile from beautiful fishing reservoirs and walks (woods, rhododendrons), is a very much praised and appreciated place. Attached to the charming owners' farmhouse are four very good and attractive cottages, three made from barns. All share an indoor heated swimming pool (behind the cottages), 29' x 12' x 4' deep, with shower/loo/basin/baby changing room and paved terrace with sun loungers. You are welcome on the owners' 35 acre farm which includes moorland with spectacular Dartmoor tor and ancient stone row. Wonderful Dartmoor views and even to the sea from most fields. Sheep, lambs (in season), ducks and chickens (egg collecting). Stabling/grazing for your own horses. An abundance of flora and fauna (badgers, deer, foxes, owls). Children's play area (sandpit, slide, swing, climbing frame, Wendy house) behind the pool building. Games room (table tennis, half-sized snooker table, pool, football game, children's games). Lovely walks and birdwatching round the reservoirs (less than a mile). Spring water. Phone/fax in owners' office. Stairgates, baby monitors, nightlights and socket covers in all (except A139). Paved garden leads to lawn with picnic table, big shady trees, two ponds (unfenced, small children beware), and shrub/woodland valley-garden (deer-visited) with stream and steep footpath down to Lustleigh (1 mile to pub). Each cottage has its own pretty, paved, enclosed patio (flowers, furniture, barbecue).
The two barn cottages, A136 and A137, are quite small but delightful: 'upside down', imaginatively, very attractively and meticulously done. Stable Corner (arrow 3) has hall; 2 steps up to two small pretty bedrooms downstairs ' a double (washbasin), and one with children's bunks (2'6"); bathroom (suite plus bath-power-shower). Stairs up to living/dining/fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer), the living area with woodburner, TV/DVD and French windows to little balcony looking over charming own patio (flowers, pergola) and down the wooded valley. Sleeps maximum of 2 adults and 2 children under 13, including babies. All good in any season: a beautiful setting.

The Devon region
Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.
The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.
Lustleigh: pretty village (good food pub, church, PO/shop, tea room) nestling into the eastern edge of Dartmoor; ½ mile to famous Lustleigh Cleave (dramatic, tree-filled river valley); close beyond it, the most varied and beautiful part of the moor. Walking, riding, fishing (river/reservoir). Golf, 3 miles; sea at Teignmouth, 10 miles, or Torbay, 12.
