Casa del' Orto (House of the Orchard) sits within a vineyard which produces 800 litres of wine per annum. The area is rich in wildlife, with roe deer, eagles and badgers all visitors to the land around the house.
The house has been restored by local craftsmen and suppliers, and where possible local materials were used.
The original part of the house dates from c. 1750 and stands on the footings of the original gatehouse to the 12th century Medici castle which is located just 100m from the house.

The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of the most beautiful areas in Italy. Rolling hills, sunflowers, wine, food, medieval hill towns, sun and relaxation can all be enjoyed here. The Northern Apennines, where the house is situated, are particularly picturesque and provide slightly cooler temperatures during the hot summer months.
While being in Tuscany, the house is also close to the beautiful coast of Liguria, including the delightful Cinque Terre - a fascinating collection of villages overlooking the Ligurian sea which is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
The cities of Parma, Pisa and Lucca are about one hour by car, or try the spectacular train trip to Lucca through the Garfagnana. Florence is about 1.5 hours by car.
The beaches of Lerici, Viareggio and Forte Dei Marme are 20 minutes by car, and in the winter months the ski resort of Cereto is only 45 minutes away.
La Spezia (30 minutes by car) is a bustling Naval port with a market on Saturday and a great selection of shops and restaurants, and is also the gateway to the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre is also famous for it distinctive white wines - the Cinque Terre and the Sciachetrà, which are both made using Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes.
Lunigiana / Aulla area
Trout fishing is available nearby in the mountain streams and lakes.
For the more active there are numerous well marked walks and cycle routes. There is a full set of walking maps in the house plus a cycling guide to the Garfagnana which is just a short drive away. Cycle hire is available locally.
The undiscovered towns of Sarzana (15 minutes by car) and Fivizzano are nearby. Sarzana has a fantastic Saturday market during the summer months. Fivizzano is well worth a visit too, where in July an archery and flag throwing competition takes place as has been done since the middle ages.
Fileto and Pontremolli (20 minutes by car) are havens of small antiques shops, and once a month a fantastic antiques fair takes place.
The local town of Gragnola holds a medieval festival during August which is quite frankly one of the best nights you can have with your clothes on! Stilt walkers and fire eaters patrol the narrow streets and the locals dress in medieval garb.
Lunigiana is full of castles, too many to name or list, however in the house there is a full set of maps and guides to the area.
How to get there
The easiest way of travelling to the house is by plane to Pisa airport, then by car.
There are numerous care hire companies at the airport, and we can recommend a good website for car hire. We can also provide directions from Pisa Airport to the house if required.

Further details indoors: The kitchen is the heart of a holiday in Italy, and with this in mind our fully-fitted kitchen has all the latest appliances. There are two bathrooms, both with fabulous walk-in showers, bath, toilet, bidet and sink.
There are three bedrooms - one master bedroom with a king size bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers, one double bedroom with a wardrobe and one twin bedroom with a chest of drawers.
There is also a comfortable living room with a sofa which converts to a double bed, and a dining room for eight with stunning views over the valley.
IPod docking station in the living room. Wireless broadband internet is available, just bring your own laptop.
Further details outdoors: Outside the house there is a table and six chairs under a pergola, which is perfect for alfresco dining.
The small river bordering the property is a perfect place to paddle one's feet in the warm weather and the river bank is an ideal spot for a picnic.

Maid service is provided twice a week.
A full set of walking maps plus a cycling guide to the Garfagnana is available for use, plus an information pack is provided listing all the local restaurants and pizzerias.
Conditions
A deposit of 25% is required upon confirmation, with the remaining balance due 28 days prior to arrival. If cancellation occurs before the remaining balance has been made, the deposit will be refunded less a GBP50 administration charge.
If cancellation occurs after the remaining balance has been made, refund of any amount is subject to the reletting of the property for the originally booked period.
A refundable GBP300 security deposit is required to cover any breakages and/or excessive cleaning costs. This deposit must be paid with the remaining balance payment.
If cancellation occurs after payment of the security deposit, the security deposit will be refunded, less any bank charges on the transfer.
Please note that the property is strictly no smoking, and we ask guests to kindly respect this.
