Home description
Casa Rosa is a two bedroom house in Vinca, a 17th century village set in Lunigiana, Tuscany, between the spectacular peaks of Pizzo d’Uccello and Mt. Garnerone, two of the highest mountains in the Apuan Alps. The house is extremely comfortable, comprising two bright bedrooms with mountain and village views, a cosy sitting room, satellite T.V., and a fully equipped kitchen with a large open log fire. Exit the front door, and find the shared terrace, a medieval Tuscan courtyard used for storing and drying chestnuts. To the rear of the terrace is the drying house, where each October a log fire is lit and maintained for six weeks to dry the village harvest of chestnuts.
Take a deep breath, and look up at the 1800 metre peaks where Michelangelo travelled to find the perfect piece of Carrara marble; look down over the village rooftops and think of the generations who trekked each day over those mountains to mine the marble. Sit in the daylong sunshine and enjoy the cool breezes circulating around the terrace. Listen to the birds, the streams, the sounds of the mountain and imagine yourself as the first person to come upon this tranquillity.

The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of the twenty Regions of Italy. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and artistic legacy, Tuscany has long been one of the most desirable holiday destinations in Italy. Whether it's a sleepy afternoon's fishing by a cool glacial stream or sipping an espresso amongst the hustle and bustle and chic boutiques of Florence, Tuscany has something for everyone.
Lunigiana area
Vinca lies in Lunigiana, northern Tuscany, between Liguria on the coast and the hinterland of Emilia Romagna. The region was formerly the fiefdom of the Malaspina family, and is characterised by their castles or fortessas, most notably at Fosdinovo, Aulla, Pontremoli, Carrara and many more.
Each village, and there are many, holds a summer festa, ranging from medieval playacting in Gragnola to feasting in Tavernelle. All worth a look!
Within an easy drive or train journey you will find the cities of Lucca, Pisa, Florence, the beautiful towns of Fosdinovo and Sarzana, and the local administrative centres of Massa and Carrara. The coastal wonders of the Cinque Terre villages, Lerici, and the ferry to Portovenere and Portofino are all only an hour away, down the mountain.
The area is also an ideal spot for walking, trekking, painting and fine dining.
