Home description
Our farmhouse “Casa Turchetti” is located in the green Lunigiana, in High Tuscany, in the very old village of Cattognano, Comano municipality (province of Massa Carrara) and along the ancient medieval route “via Francigena”. The house is an ancient mansion built by our ancestors since the half of 17th century and to the beginning of 19th century, today completely restored with every modern comfort but maintaining in the structure all the charm of an ancient historical building. Inside the complex there is a restaurant where to taste typical dishes.
Moreover it is the ideal holiday for those who love nature, trekking (the mansion is surrounded by walnut woods and a lot of CAI selected pathways) and kayak. The Taverone torrent, 1 kilometre far from the mansion, is a desired course for those who love that activity and for those who love to have a bath in its fresh and clear waters. Besides it is possible to pick up mushrooms in our private woods.

The Tuscany region
Very few places in the world can boast an artistic legacy with contents so deeply rooted in the territory and popular culture as Tuscany: an elect land of art and civilisation which today continues to be a sought-after place of residence and source of inspiration for numerous Italian and foreign artists.
The countless testimonies of art in Tuscany indeed narrate a story as articulated and complex as it is unique and unrepeatable, starting at the dawn of civilisation and continuing, without solution of continuity, up until present day. For the visitor, a trip to Tuscany at the beginning of the Third Millennium holds much the same fascination that accompanied the travellers on the Grand Tour. The first-time visitor to the lands of Tuscany can not but be amazed by the natural symbiosis between landscape and culture, history and the expressive means of architecture and town-planning, the urban and rural dimension, and its patrimony of art, architecture, monuments and museums.
A cradle of Italian civilisation and one of the greatest crucibles of modern European culture, Tuscany is not only tied to the extraordinary elaboration of concepts and the original expression of forms and methods that left their mark in more than two millennia of history: it was itself a forge of an extraordinary artistic production that set pace and means on the continent.
We need only recall the universal nature of the Renaissance which, starting in Florence and thanks to the versatility and genius of its extraordinary interpreters, spread and took root throughout Europe. Tuscany as a workshop of artistic experiences, as a place of synthesis and rebirth on a universal level. A synthesis of art in this region begins with the cave dwellings of Cetona, the stele-statues of Lunigiana, the presence of ancient civilisations on Elba Island, and then continues with the Etruscan necropolises with tangible signs of a Roman past, the countless testimonies of the Middle Ages, the flowering of the Gothic, the explosion of the Renaissance, the opulence of the Baroque, the Macchiaioli, the flowery art nouveau style, termed Liberty, finally reaching the expressions and trends of contemporary art.
Lunigiana / Comano area
Like a fable, a hidden mechanism opens a secret door and you arrive in LUNIGIANA, a landscape suspended in the past, there for those who want to feel its charm. Wherever you look you learn. Seize the moments of history that this lunar valley has left for visitors to inherit. And this land, green with chestnut and beech trees and scoured by clear waters, has seen many a traveller.
This has always been its destiny, it is a passageway and a border, and thus a land to defend. So thought the Romans, the founders of Luni, and so believed those later, who secured a route to the sea through the Via Francigena. This is why there are castles, fortresses and fortified villages defining these horizons. Several still remain, but in feudal times, when enemies were everywhere to be seen and the small feuds fought for supremacy, there were around one hundred and sixty. The ones remaining bear witness to these bygone times for those who wish to listen. Their voices are ever fascinating for those used to hearing the whispers of noble and secret cities. Their thousand-year-old stories still leave you spellbound.
Just think of the mystery surrounding the prehistoric stele statues and you will shiver at the sight of these sculpted and stylised stone idols. Divinities or chiefs, symbols or armed warriors with their ornate and prosperous women.
This mystery is still open, the enigma still to be solved. Once upon a time this was a land of thoroughfare and hence of communication and welcome for travellers and so it is today for visitors. Its hospitable and singular inhabitants, who feel neither Tuscan, Ligurian nor Emilian, have created a basic, balanced and tasty cuisine. You will discover testaroli and panigacci, olive oil honey and wines such as the famous Candia, another pleasant way to get to know this enchanting valley.
