The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of Italy's world famous regions, with its enchanting landscapes from the mountain to the sea, its towns with museums, cathedrals, historical buildings, streets - towns like Florence, Siena, Pisa and many more . . . full of ancient Etruscan and Roman ruins.
You can not pass through this land without being aware of Medieval Tuscany. Still visible are the small walled towns which are a testimony to the Middle Ages just as much as its great cities. Castles, fortresses, watch-towers, and town walls appear everywhere amongst the stunning scenery - there's nowhere else in the world quite like it . . . and with Northern Tuscany as relatively undiscovered as it is . . . it's the perfect holiday destination to experience Tuscany at its best.
Lunigiana / Licciana Nardi area
This is a fantastic location for tranquility . . . yet such close proximity to beaches and historical centres of interest . . . (and ski-ing is just 30 mins away in the winter season)
Once at the farmhouse, the ambience is towards relaxation and enjoying the peace and stunning scenery. However, If you feel the need to venture out . . .
For areas of historical interest with beautiful architecture and museums - Lucca is 55 mins, Pisa 50 mins and Florence 1.5 hrs away - amongst others.
If you would like a mix of beach, great shops, art galleries, lovely restaurants - Forte dei Marmi is appx 40 mins away.
For beaches:
Lerici is only 30 mins from the house - a very pretty beach resort with public and private beaches - good for nightlife.
The Cinque Terre is just 40 mins away . . . known as the Italian Riviera as it boasts chic resorts, charming fishing villages and rustic hillside villages - and also known as the Gulf of the Poets as it was a favourite location for novelists Shelley, Byron and DH Lawrence. The area is recognised by Unesco as "Mankind's World Heritage" and because of its World Heritage listing - is now National Park. There are five stunning and remote villages, hence 'cinque', and they each have their own character. These are: Monterosso, Vernazza Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. There is virtually no car access to the villages but the main railway line between Genoa and La Spezia runs along the coast, mainly in tunnels, and the villages are only a few minutes apart from each other. However, these access difficulties are the best guarantee for its preservation. A train from Aulla can take you to the Cinque Terre in 20 mins during the Summer months - or you can take a daytrip on a boat from Lerici along the beautiful coastline. You can hike, swim and watch the sunsets away from the tourists in the Italian cities and the French Riviera.
Viareggio: 70mins from house, long sandy beach, great for kids, lots of restaurants and a market.
Portofino: 1 hour from the house, Italian Riviera, Portofino has long been a chic and fashionable resort.
Health and beauty:
Terme di Equi (Fivizzano) - 25mins from house. thermal natural waters
Skiing:
Cerreto: slopes are 40mins from house - including open air ice skating rink. Aetone: slopes 1hour from house. Larger resort for more of a challenge.
All distances quoted are approximate.
Lunigiana
Lunigiana is the undiscovered northernmost tip of Tuscany and lies between the coastal province of Liguria to the west and the Apennine mountains to the north-east. To the south-east the region is dominated by the peaks of the Parco Alpi Apuane beyond which are the Renaisance Cities of Florence, Pisa and Lucca.
This is an area of outstanding natural beauty dotted with ancient hill-top villagesand terraced olive groves. Not yet discovered by tourists the area is economically poor but rich in other ways. Here the pace is slow, the food and wine robust and the smiles as warm as the sunshine. Here the old-fashioned courtesies are observed and the stranger made welcome.
Lunigiana is a veritable paradise for walkers, painters, photographers, and those who simply enjoy the pleasures of life, and is full of natural curiosities such as the caves near Equi Terme, site of the natural sulphur baths. There are also castles, churches, monuments and whole villages built before Columbus set sail for the New World. Names of once-mighty families such as the Medici and Malaspina are commemorated by the fountains, piazzas and palaces they left behind, and all of this is within an hour or so train ride or drive of their more famous cousins to the south - Florence, Pisa and Lucca. And if that is not enough there are festivals, street markets and palios a-plenty - often in medieval costume.
Exiting from the motorway at Aulla, the Taverone and Aulella valleys radiate, the hillsides of which are covered with chestnut woods and high meadows. At the end of the Taverone valley the Lagestrello pass marks the route through into Parma Province, the source of the River Taverone and the end of the Crenale mountain ridge. Leading more directly east from Aulla the old Lucca road runs along the Aulella valley, through Casola and on into the Parco Alpi Apuane before turning south along the old pilgrim road to Lucca.
Bordering Lunigiana to the west, past La Spezia and the famous pretty fishing villages of The Cinque Terre is the province of Liguria, with its sandy beaches and pleasant climate
How to get there
Driving from Pisa . . . take autostrada towards Genoa – as you approach La Spezia, take autostrada towards Parma – 5 mins on the motorway, you come to Aulla – take this exit. . . property is 15 mins from this point.
