The Tuscany region
Lunigiana is the region to the extreme north of the Tuscany, situated between Liguria and Emilia Romagna along the course of the river Magra and its affluents, but historically its borders are much wider. Characterized from sweet hills, immense green meadows and high mountains, it is encircled from the Appennines and the Alps Apuane. Lunigiana is a small homogenous region that offers a mild climate and a sweet atmosphere, perfect for resting and holidays. The millenial story of its history are visible, from the mysterious “statue stele” to the roman ruins, from old churches and medieval castles to the baroque palaces.
Characterized by sweet hills, green meadows and crystalline torrents, Lunigiana offer a great variety of tastes, with typical plates like the “testaroli” or the “torta d’erbi”, and valuable wines. Try them during the many festivals you can find, above all in the summertime. Festivals and events in Lunigiana The traditional folkloric festivals are held in the open air or in old medieval villages. The most famous are the Medieval markets of Filetto, of the Verrucola in Fivizzano and of Gragnola; the Bancarelvino, the "Festa della fame e della Sete in Filattiera"...
The Lunigiana peculiarity is the presence of numerous castles and medieval villages. This artisitic production has been paradoxically the reason of the fast decadence of the region. Concerning this we must say that the Malaspinas followed rules which were quite different from those applied in othere Italian feuds for the succession of the heirs to the feudal power the property, the estates and the power were divided into equal parts among all sons, without a special treatment for the eldest one. That brought to the formation of tens of little feuds inside which new castles were built in occasion of every succession. So, many little and picturesque castles and walled villages were built, but that caused the weakening of the power of the family generation after generation. Filetto and Filattiera are among those old walled villages, in defence of the Longobards invasion. The Francigena Way and the important Appennine routes increased ulteriorly this characteristic of passage and defence against different armies. For example, the villages of Pontremoli like Bratto, Braia and Grondola, towards the Brattello and the Borgallo; Montereggio in Mulazzo, an ancient way towards the Val di Vara; the Rocca Sigillina of Filattiera towards the step of the Cirone; the village of Treschietto in Bagnone dominating the roads towards the mount Orsaro. The villages of Aulla were instead along the way Francigena, Albiano, Caprigliola, Olivola and Bibola. And still the eastern Lunigiana with Moncigoli, Monte dei Bianchi, Equi Terme, Monzone or Casola in Lunigiana with Regnano.
Castles, churches, villages in Lunigiana the millenial traces of the history of the Lunigiana are present all over the territory. From the mysterious “statue stele” of the Liguri populations, to the Roman archaeological site, from the old churches to the medieval castles, and the palaces from Rinascimento.
