Home description
This stone cottage with original features was completely rebuilt in 2005. The cottage is detached and set in a tranquil mountainside location in the hamlet of Piastorla. It is ideal for a romantic break, honeymoon or a retreat, but still only 15 minutes away from Fivizzano. The town has a wide range of shops and good restaurants and a lovely square where the market is held on Tuesdays. The square is a great place to have coffee and ice cream and people watch. The tourist town of Comano is also a 15 minutes drive away where you can go horse riding - there is also a pharmacy, post office, restaurants, bars, a tourist information centre, and yet more restaurants.
The cottage benefits from a very high ceiling which gives a light, airy feel. It is fully centrally heated and has a large open log fire. There is an outside patio area to drink your apertivo in the evening with a BBQ and watch the sun go down over the Appenine mountains. A DVD player and small movie library is also provided. A collection of games and books is also available.

The Tuscany region
The property is situated in Lunigiana which is in largely undiscovered Northern Tuscany. Lunigiana is the most northern part of Tuscany bordering Liguria. This is a quiet area where traditions are still strong.
The marble peaks of the Apuan and the Appenine mountain ranges encompass the region against which magical outlines of castles can be seen, many restored while others remain romantic ruins. Paths lead through narrow village streets with stone houses rendered beautiful with simplicity. During the long summer nights the village streets are lit by candle light with live performances and cantinas are opened selling local handicrafts.
In contrast to Lunigiana, the Ligurian coast is so very close in distance but in many ways a world apart. A short drive takes you to the Gulf of the Poets where you can wander the bustling, old streets of La Spezia, enjoy a drink in its many bars and of course explore the shops. Relax in one of the many seafood restaurants at Lerici and watch the sunset from the harbour.
Cultural centres such as Parma and Lucca are in easy reach. Florence can be visited by car in about an hour and 30 minutes or experience the superb scenery by train. Transport links are very good and inexpensive, however car hire is recommended to really appreciate the region.
Lunigiana / Fivizzano area
The cottage is situated 15 minutes away from either Fivizzano or Comano. Both have a range of restaurants and shops, though Fivizzano is a more picturesque medieval Italian town with a lovely market square. Comano has a good tourist information centre and a restaurant with a swimming pool and is the local centre for horse riding. The hills surrounding the area are full of pretty villages. The area offers a variety of walks through the hills and moutains.
Beautiful walks can be taken directly from the cottage. The picturesque Cinque Terre is less than an hour away, as is Portevenere with its wonderful seafood restaurants and boat trips to Lerici and the Gulf of the Poets. Portofino is an hour and a half away. The beaches of Viareggio are also less than an hour, and this is where the annual opera festival is held. Should you wish to travel further afield Florence is 2 hours away by train from Aulla. The walled city of Lucca, excellent for shopping, is also an hours drive as is Pisa, Genova and Parma. The outlet centre at Fidenza, where some serious bargains can be had on designer clothes and leather handbags, is an hour and a half away, near to Parma.
How to get there
- Pisa is the nearest airport to the region, but Ryanair usually have better deals to either Genoa or Parma. Our preference would be to fly into Parma which is a small airport, handily situated for access to motorways.
- A car will be essential and we normally find the best deals from www.auto-europe.co.uk. It will take approximately 50 minutes to get to the nearest largest town, which is Aulla and then about another 25 to get to the property.
- Other flight options you might consider are: British Airways Gatwick : Pisa, Bologna Heathrow : Milan (Linate / Malpensa) Ryanair Stanstead : Pisa, Genova, Bergamo (Milan), Forli Liverpool: Pisa Easyjet Bristol : Pisa Gatwick : Milan (Linate) Luton : Bologna Jet2 Manchester : Pisa Leeds/Bradford : Pisa (Proposed summer 2006) Thomsonfly Coventry / Doncaster / Bournemouth : Pisa Alitalia Heathrow : Milan (Linate/Malpensa) Manchester : Milan (Malpensa)

Further details indoors: The cottage is equipped to a good standard. The kitchen is simple but has everything you will need for a self-catering holiday, should you choose not to explore the wonderful range of restaurants available within a 15 minute drive. You enter directly into the large open plan dining area and lounge. The small, but well equipped, kitchen is situated to the left. The two bedrooms and the bathroom are on the lower floor which makes them very cool during the hot summer months.
The cottage is looked after by a local family who speak little English but who are extremely friendly and might even provide you with some of their own vegetables.
Further details outdoors: The garden is solely for your use and is completely private. It is a good size and safe for smaller children.

Dear Michael, The house was lovely, and although we spent much of the time on trips, we thought it was a great base. The hamlet is very picturesque, almost like the set of some movie. The guidelines were very good and very useful, and we were impressed by the depth you had gone into. Best wishes Colm Ireland May 2007
