The Lombardy / Varese/Lake Maggiore region
Lake Maggiore is a breathtakingly beautiful area of Italy and provides a base to visit Milan or the other Italian Lakes - Lake Como, Lake Orta and further afield, Lake Garda.
Luino / Dumenza area
The house is perfectly situated for visiting the towns around the lake - Luino, Cannobio, Cannero, Stresa and Arona. The best way to get around is to catch one of the many boats from either Luino or Maccagno. Also not to be missed on the lake are the Borromean Islands.
Slightly further afield, the Italian city of Como is just 45 minutes drive away. Lake Como enjoys its own ferry service and features the gorgeous towns of Bellagio and Varenna plus Villa Carlotta. George Clooney has a villa on this lake!
You are also just 15 minutes away by car from Switzerland and the beautiful Swiss city of Lugano. Lugano has some fantastic shops as well as a beautiful lido which we would highly recommend in the summer. Once in Lugano, you might also want to experience the Monte Salvatore funicular. A 10 minute ride takes you to the mountain top where there are some fantastic views.
Or you can catch a train into Milan city centre. The city is famous for shopping and fashion and is well worth a visit. It's a short metro train ride to Santa Maria delle Grazie and Leonardo da Vinci's painting of 'The Last Supper.'
For cheaper shopping than Milan, Luino boasts the biggest weekly market in Europe. With 356 stalls, it draws bargain hunters from as far away as Germany and Holland. Alternatively, you could have a look at Foxtown, in Mendrisio, an outlet centre where the most famous international brands offer their products at factory prices direct to the customer. In Omegna, a little village on the other side of the lake, Alessi has a factory and outlet shop.
The nearest beaches on Lake Maggiore are only 5 minutes away by car at Maccagno. Nearby Maccagno is also one of the best spots on the lake to enjoy watersports such as windsurfing, sailing and kitesurfing. Also gaining popularity on the lake is scuba diving. Boat rental, pedalo and canoe hire is also easily available.
If hiking is your cup of tea, then Val Veddasca is ideal. Val Veddesca is north of Dumenza and includes the Passo della Forcora (m 1179), about 12 miles from Dumenza. The scenery and nature is fabulous. Most of the nearby mountains also have tracks for mountain bikes. Bike rental is available in nearby Germignaga.
For those interested in skiing, there is a practice run with a button lift at La Forcora, 20 minutes away. 1 hour away there are the slopes at Mottarone and 1 hour 30 mins away the well known Swiss ski resorts of Airolo and St Bernadino.
And for the golf enthusiast, there are 6 good courses within a range of 40 km. More details can be found at www.agolfingexperience.com.
The area offers plenty to do for children and families. Places worth a visit are Swissminiatur, where you will find 3500 metres of railway and more than 120 models representing the houses, castles and cathedrals of Switzerland. On the way here is the Alprose Swiss chocolate factory which introduces you to the various steps of chocolate making, whilst in the other direction is the European Museum of Transport. For those looking for something more active, Monte Tamaro is a great place for the family to enjoy with an alpine bob sleigh and the longest flying fox in Switzerland! Or you could try your hand at falconry in Locarno or visit a safari park in Pombia!
Please ask if you would like more detailed information on what to see and do in the area. We would be happy to send you more information.

Further details
As the house is on 3 levels and as there are steps down from the car park to the front door to the villa, I am afraid that the house is unsuitable for wheelchair access.
