Luino / Dumenza area
Dumenza is only a mile from the Swiss border and the Italian speaking Swiss town of Lugano is not far away. Lugano can be found on the shores of Lake Lugano.
There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance from the accommodation in Dumenza. There are plenty of bars & restaurants in Luino, by the lake. It is about 10 minute by car. There is also a bus service to Luino.
The best way to see the lake is to take one of the many inexpensive boat trips. You can visit Isola Bella & Isola Madre by boat
Lugano by Lake Lugano, only 9 miles from Dumenza in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland
Connobio on the western shore - definitely worth visiting by boat
San Bernardino ski resort in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland - high in the Alps only an hour by car
An attractive place to visit is Locarno on the northern end of Lake Maggiore in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland
Here are a few ideas of things to do and places to visit on and around Lake Maggiore. Most of them are near Dumenza. Please let me know if you are going to book. You can see photos of all these places on http://www.selfcateringitaly.co.uk/thingstodo.htm .
BORROMEAN ISLANDS - The best way to get to these islands is by boat from Luino. You can by a tourist ticket (biglietto turistico) for about €18 per person which will cover the return trip to the islands and the boat trips between the islands. The first island is Isola Madre. This only has one restaurant so it is best to make use of your time in the Botanic gardens (cost €10 per person). The next boat leaves for Isola Superiore just over an hour later.
Isola Superiore has a small village on it with a wider choice of lakeside cafes and restaurants. Isola Bella is a very short boat trip from Isola Superiore and this also has more cafes as well as botanic gardens. If you spend and hour on Superior and an hour on Isola Bella you can catch the last boat to Luino, which leaves at about 3.30pm and arrives just after 5pm. Please check timetables locally as occasionally they may change.
MACCAGNO - with its beach & beautiful views. Maccagno is on the shore of Lake Maggiore, only 11 minute drive from Dumenza. Maccagno is in a magnificent location on Lake Maggiore with the lake on one side and green valleys on the other. From here you can see the beautiful peaks of Canton Ticino as well as the Borromean Gulf. If you would like to spend the day relaxing in the sun in the summer or take a stroll in the winter there is a beach. The beach is found at the mouth of the river Giona. Over the river there is museum, with a collection of modern art.
LUINO MARKET - every Wednesday. Luino holds its large market every Wednesday, with people coming from Switzerland, Germany and France. The stalls fill the all the main streets of the town are filled with market stalls, with a wide variety of goods. There is an almost limitless supply of handbags, shoes and sunglasses The weekly market has been held on Luino since 1541. It has over 300 stalls, making it the biggest weekly market in Europe. Luino is the most important town on the Lombardy side of the lake and the nearest town to Dumenza, about 10 minutes by car. There are also buses that run between Dumenza and Luino. Market day is the only day when you have to pay to use the large gravel car park by the lake, but you usually find a space.
MILAN - visit Italy's second city for the day. If you would like to take a trip to Milan it is only 1.5 hours by car from Dumenza. Milan is the capital of Lombardy and Italy’s second city with a municipa population of 1.3 million. It is located in the flat plains if of Lombardy. If you only have a short time to spend in Milan make sure you visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping centre) in the Piazza Duomo and of course the Duomo (Cathedral). The Duomo has over 2,000 sculptures and numerous spires.

LAVENO - beautiful views of opposite shore - Laveno is only 35 minute by car Dumenza and from here you can catch a car ferry to the other side of the lake, leaving every 20 minutes. But there is plenty to see and do in Laveno as well. Laveno has a beautiful panorama of the shore on the Piedmont side of the lake, and the Borromean Gulf. The town is overlooked by the Sasso di Ferro which can be reached by cable car or by walking along the ancient mule-track. There is also a car ferry to the opposite shore.
As well as having so many beautiful panoramas, Laveno is also famous for its pottery and china. The photos below were taken on taken on New Year's Eve. Just south of Laveno you will find Santa Caterina
SANTA CATERINA - jewel of Lake Maggiore. Santa Caterina del Sasso or St Catherine's Hermitage, one of the jewels of Lake Maggiore, is perched just above the water. It is found on the eastern shore of the lake just south of Laveno, clinging to the cliffs of Sasso Ballaro.
In the 12th century Alberto Besozzi, a wealthy merchant, almost lost his life in a storm as his boat capsized. He prayed to Saint Catherine of Alessandria to save him when a wave deposited him on a ledge. He the dedicated the rest of his life to the saint, living in in a cave as a hermit while the locals lowered food and water to him in a basket. The hermitage was founded in the 13th century. It is notable not only for its position but also its decaying frescoes dating from its foundation.
VAL VEDDASCA - great area for walking. Val Veddasca is north of Dumenza and includes the Passo della Forcora (m 1179), about 12 miles from Dumenza. To get there by car head first for Maccagno then follow the signs Veddasca and then Lake Delio. When you reach your destination you will find amazing views of the mountains around Lake Maggiore.
