The Burgundy region
Hot summers and cold crisp winters make fine conditions for vines and the most famous area in the Yonne is Chablis. Half an hour drive from the cottage takes you into the Chablis hillsides covered in vines. You will be able to taste wines at many of the vineyards and outlets in the village of Chablis itself and also nearer to home at Irancy, St Bris and Coulanges la Vineuse.
Ideal area for outdoor activities, walking and cycling are a joy because the area is so unspoilt and wonderful for sampling the local food and hospitality.
Vezelay with it's famous Bascilica is a short drive away. Auxerre is on the banks of the River Yonne with good shopping and beautiful Cathedral and Abbey. Many good restaurants here.
Clamecy, old town with the canal running through and ancient streets leading to the church.
Lots of pretty, old villages around with the Nivernais Canal amd River Yonne meandering through.
The Grottes D'Arcy provide a subterranean interest with many cave wall paintings and drawings

"A perfect Burgundian oasis"
I hesitated to review this holiday, because I almost don't want everyone else to know how lovely it was. Graham and Ruth are a superb couple and provided us with a really warm welcome after a frankly disastrous journey down (avoid Paris at all cost!) - we were three hours late but they met us at the cottage, log burner already blazing away in the sitting room. The accommodation was extremely comfortable, and I had every utensil I could possibly need in the kitchen. Mind your head upstairs!
Lucy-sur-Yonne is a charming if very quiet village, and through Graham and Ruth we met some lovely people whom we look forward to seeing again in the future. This is the thing you see: I don't want the cottage to become so booked up that we can't rent it again in the future, as it is a really lovely area of countryside and we would love to return.
