The Tuscany region
(Greve in Chianti, 15 km; Radda in Chianti 12km, Figline, 12 km, Florence34,5 km, Siena 45,8 km), Le Refie is located in the heart of Chianti Classico wine area. Chianti, the area in which Chianti Classico wine has been produced for centuries, is that part of Tuscany that is bordered to the north by the suburbs of Florence, to the east by the Chianti Mountains, to the south by the city of Siena and to the west by the valleys of the Pesa and Elsa rivers. It is a land of ancient traditions that was civilized in remote periods first by the Etruscans, who left many traces of their activity in the wine sector, and then by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the cities of Florence and Siena battled for control over the zone. Villages and monasteries, castles and fortresses appeared during that period and many of them were later transformed into villas see villa Carbonaia 300 meters far from the farmhouse(private villa no tours are available) and country residences when times were more peaceful. It was then that spaces were cleared in the vast forests of chestnuts and oaks for the cultivation of vines and olive trees, an activity that progressively assumed major economic importance and established an international reputation. Le Refie farmhouse is still surrounded nowadays both by the original chestnut and oaks forests and the vineyards. Le Refie farmhouse still belongs nowadays to the count Capponi family owner of Villa Calcinaia and producer of Chianti Classico wine.( Tours and wine tasting are available at Villa Calcinaia estate 17km far from Le refie apartment). Guests can enjoy a private 3x7mt swimmingpool and a 800mq private garden .
Overlooking on the old medieval road to Greve, the Villa of Calcinaia 17km,20 minutes by car far from Le Refie farmhouse owes its present look to the Capponi family, who bought it in 1524. The estate is located in the very heart of the Chianti region, 2 Km from Greve, 21 Km from Florence and 50 Km from Siena. At present the Villa is placed at the end of a cypress-lined drive and surrounded by 150 hectares of land, which include woods, vineyards and olive-groves. Villa Calcinaia offers wine tasting and tours through the old cellar and estate. Tours meetingpoints or wine tasting are at the Villa Calcinaia shop via Citille 71 ss222 Chiantigiana.
Greve in Chianti is often considered the entrance gate into the Chianti region since it is the first major town you reach as you head south of Florence toward Siena. It is located along the SR222 provincial road, locally known as the Chiantigiana road, at about 30 km south of Florence and 40 km north of Siena.
We recommend visiting Greve for various reasons. It is a small town, not lying at the top of a hill but its interestingly shaped main square is the perfect location from which to wander around, enjoy an espresso, gelato cone or wine glass on a stop here on your trip through Chianti. What is there to see in Greve? Let's start from its history to understand what we see today.
Greve's history is connected to the beautiful Castle of Montefioralle located above the town - Greve was the castle's marketplace starting in the 13th century (we also highly recommend visiting what remains today of the small medievall village of Monterfioralle while you're here). Greve's strategic position at the crossroads of three important pilgrimage roads - the Chiantigiana road, the road to Valdarno and the road to Val di Pesa - favored its economic growth
Radda in Chianti is a beautiful medieval town enclosed in large defensive walls. Located up on a hill between the valleys of Arbia and Pesa, it has ancient origins. It has been inhabited since the 9th century and was already mentioned in a document from 1002.
Under Florentine control, Radda was the headquarters of the Chianti League and the seat of the Florentine governor housed in the beautiful 15th century Palazzo del Podestà, its facade decorated with several coats of arms. The town maintains its medieval look characterized by narrow streets meeting in the main square where you'll find the Church of San Niccolò, a church of Romanesque origins which displays a venerated wooden Crucifix from the 15th century.
Not far from this square is the Grand Duke's Ice house, built at the end of the 19th century to preserve snow and turn it into ice. The Museum of Sacred Art of Chianti deserves a visit. Set in the Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria in Prato, it displays several works of art from the Chianti region, including a valuable polyptich by Neri di Bicci (1474) depicting the Virgin Mary with child and saints.
