Home description

The apartment is where the servants of nearby Villa Bottini used to live and has been re-structured to a high standard under the supervision of the Belle Arte Society. The immediate impression is most attractive with terracotta tiled floors and the original beams exposed. The furniture in the living room / kitchen is carefully chosen and comfortable with the kitchen well-equipped (hob only) and the units of cherry wood.

Apart from the accommodation, the attraction of Casa Bottini is its central position. The gardens of the villa at the back are open to the public, the church opposite with its cloisters is an open space while the Botanic Garden (Orto Botanico) is only a couple of hundred metres away and is open to the public. Along with that is a range of bars and restaurants in the street below to suit every taste and pocket.

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is a large and varied region of Italy. It is best known as the home of Florence (Firenze in Italian) where the renaissance of art and sculpture began in the 15th Century. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo both came from Florence. Galileo who proved that the earth goes round the sun also came from Tuscany. He was a native of Pisa and did experiments from the top of the world famous leaning tower.

Lucca is the provincial capital of this part of Tuscany. It is a medieval city on a plain and is still completely surrounded by its 16th Century walls. It has rightly become a noted tourist destination. The rolling hills around Lucca are famous for olive oil production.

Lucca area

Lucca is fast catching up with Siena as people's favourite city. It is a busy, bustling city, smaller than Siena and one of its enormous charms lies in the fact that it is still surrounded by its city walls, completed in 1645 to replace the medieval walls, which in turn replaced the original Roman walls. The centuries of history contained within the walls, from medieval churches to 18th C villas, are impossible to sum up in a few brief sentences; a few suggestions for holiday activities are:
- hiring bikes and cycling round the walls (4.5kms round)
- culture, music, theatre and art exhibitions are held throughout the city.
- eating. Lucca restaurants are famous, ranging from pizza and salad places to the highest of 'haute cuisine'. One of the best, and reasonably priced, restaurants is situated under the apartment.
- sightseeing; Lucca is an excellent transport hub, good for visiting Florence, Pisa, Viareggio

How to get there

Getting to the apartment couldn't be simpler - fly to Pisa and take the bus that goes direct from the airport to the centre of Lucca ( 50 mins). Otherwise several trains go throughout the day Pisa - Lucca (20 mins).

Further details indoors:
Visitors walk directly into the good size living room / kitchen. The sitting area is at the front with a view of the church of San Michelotto opposite (see photo). To the left of the living area is a small alcove off which are a bathroom (with shower), a single bedroom which can double as a study and a twin bedroom, everything to a high standard of comfort and decor.

The third bedroom is a double with bathroom en-suite and comes at the back of the apartment. The arrangement of the bedrooms makes the apartment flexible, either for a mixed group of family or friends or indeed for a couple. Visitors report that the mattresses are very comfortable. Several people return for a second and third visit.

Further details outdoors:
Below the apartment is a restaurant which is much appreciated by visitors for its excellent food and good prices. If visitors come with a car, parking is possible while loading and unloading suitcases. Meter parking is nearby and there are large carparks not far away outside the walls.

The area, known as Sant' Elisa, is an attractive and genuine part of the city. A bustling market is held every Wednesday in the nearby Via S. Elisa while the more obvious tourist attractions of the amphitheatre, the Guinigi Tower etc are only a walk away.
