The Tuscany region
Tuscany is renowned for it's warm Mediterranean climate, it's beauty, culture and gastronomic delights. All of these qualities can be found in abundance in the Province of Lucca.
The hills surrounding Lucca were considered extremely desirable by the noble classes during the hot summer months and there are numerous fascinating villas to visit .The hill top villages once the stronghold of warring families, hold many still untouched treasures. The long sandy beaches of the Versilia coast are famous. Tuscany boasts many cities full of beauty and culture - Florence, Siena, Lucca, San Gimignano and many more plus numerous small hill top villages.
Lucca / Ponte a Moriano area
Ponte a Moriano is a vibrant village with a large variety of bars and restaurants - from Michelin rated to family run Trattoria. There is a weekly market, an ice cream parlour, a good variety of local shops, banking facilities and a large supermarket on the edge of town.
The ancient walled town of Lucca (6 miles) has excellent shopping, a Cathederal with magnificent frescoes and marble sculptures. It is also Puccini's birthplace and opera lovers will be surrounded by reminders of this famous composer. Art plays a large part in local life and there are still small artisan workshops hidden away all over town. An antiques market and art exhibition are held once a month. Lucca hosts a now famous 'Summer Festival' with almost nightly pop concerts throughout July. Elton John, George Michael, Anastacia, James Morrison, The Eagles, James Taylor have all featured. Puccini Operas are held in the magical setting of Lago Puccini during July and August. A visit to the huge underground caves of Grotto del Vento (30 mins drive) is highly recommended. Florence is just 55 mins. drive with good links from Lucca via train or air-conditioned buses (which are the preferable form of travel as parking in the city is difficult) The beaches on the Versillia coast - nearest is Viarregio but our favourite is Forte dei Marmi - are within easy reach. Throughout the summer there are numerous local festivals or 'Sagra' usually named after local food specialities but this is not the only option - all tastes are covered!. You should visit at least one to get a feel of village life. Everyone is very welcoming and with music and dancing it is a very jolly evening. The children can run around freely and probably make new italian friends!
The Versillia coast is 35/40 mins drive. Florence within an hour. Siena 1.5. An excellent location!
