The Tuscany region
Florence is less than an hour’s drive away on the A11, Pisa takes about 30 mins for the statutory visit to the leaning tower, Viareggio is a wonderful seaside resort which combines clean beaches with evening sophistication and fantastic shopping. Younger children can enjoy a trip to the Pinocchio Park at Collodi, although don’t go expecting Disneyland – its attractions are pretty limited!
Further off the beaten track, Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo makes a good afternoon out, a pretty village up in the hills with a great museum displaying models of his inventions.
Siena, Pistoia, Montecatini, San Gimignano, Volterra, Portofino are all well worth a visit if you have the time and inclination, or for something a bit different, a trip up to the marble mountains in Carrara.
During the summer months there is a boat trip which operates from Viareggio and takes you on a tour of the Cinque Terre, stopping at Monterosso for lunch and Portovenere on the way back. Well worth doing as long as your children have better sea-legs than mine! No need to book, you just turn up early at the port side in Viareggio, boats leave at 9.00 a.m. and cost around 40 Euro per person.
Lucca / Capannori area
Lucca is a stunning city with an inexhaustible supply of beautiful shops and great bars and restaurants. The market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is well worth a visit. The bike ride around the walls of Lucca is a must, bikes available to hire in the Piazza Santa Maria, although it’s best to avoid Sundays if you can, as it really is Piccadilly Circus. During the summer months, Lucca is packed with festivals - the music festival in July is world famous and in the past has attracted some very big names including Elton John and George Michael. Naturally there is never any shortage of tributes to Lucca's most famous son - Puccini. The biggest Puccini festival takes place in Torre del Lago, about 25 mins drive in throughout July and August.
How to get there

Guestbook
The villa was a wonderful setting for our family gathering of 13. Plenty of room and space for everyone. The beautiful pool was a welcome relief after a day of sightseeing as well as a perfect early evening gathering spot before dinner. The trattoria near the house, when open, is a must for a 'lively local' lunch. The villa is 15 minutes from Lucca which was a delightful/historical walled city with plenty of restaurants and shops and not many tourists. Bus service is available from Lucca to Florence (one hour ride). The villa is also less than ½ hour from the beach at Viareggio and we were able to visit Siena in less than 2 hours on a day trip. Supermarkets and fabulous ice cream, gelato,at Papa Grappa`s is also available within minutes of the house. The villa has an outdoor built in pizza oven and we were served the most delicious pizza cooked by Lionelle. A fabulous Tuscan dinner was also arranged and prepared for us in the spacious kitchen/dining area.

The villa is even nicer than represented in the photographs! That is always a welcomed surprise. The pool is wonderful and beautifully maintained. As a pool owner myself, I was extremely impressed with the condition and quality of the pool. The vegetation surrounding the house is fabulous...lavender, rosemary, trumpet vines, palm trees and evergreens. A true mediterranean experience. The BBQ pit is much more than a BBQ pit. It is in fact the original oven used to supply the town with all its bread. The original owner was the baker for San Ginese. The 'pit' is really an outside dining area. The 'pizza man', Leonello, was the gem of the place. He cooked pizza and bruschetta for 16 of us and made the evening for an 8 year old boy by letting him make and bake his own pizza in the oven. He has a heart as big as all Italy itself. No visit would be complete without having Leonello in attendance. Later Leonello returned with a gift for us, the special bread of Lucca. The Tuscan dinner was another big success. It was beautifully done and very professional. The food was excellent. The staff was extremely gracious. Rosemary the manager, was fantastic. She couldn`t have been any more accommodating to our group. Some of us arrived several hours early and she allowed them access to the house and pool. Then she put us onto a Lucca tourist guide who helped with our arrangements. Rosemary is a really kind, understanding person who adapted well to our large group and all its requests. She is a real asset! The bathrooms were fabulous. I should be so lucky at home!

I wanted to tell you what a wonderful time we had in Tuscany! The villa was wonderful and perfect for our group. Rosemary was a huge help, and a complete pleasure to talk to. We had beautiful weather, enjoyed the pool as well as visiting Pisa, Florence, San Gimignano and the Cinque Terre. Lucca is a lovely place and I would recommend the area to anyone planning a visit to Italy. We had Leonardo come and show us how to make pizza at the villa in the middle of the week and it was great. He had 14 people so full that we couldn`t move, and he was still making pizzas! Thank you so much for all your help and I sincerely hope to be able to do this again in the future!
