The Tuscany region

Lucca is in the central Italian region of Tuscany and is one of Italy's less flashy destinations.

Favoured by the quieter kind of foreign visitor, Lucca is often whispered of as a secret gem; an alternative to the high-season tourist madness of Florence, or Rome. A town still encircled by its wall, it is full of pastry shops and bicycles; visitors are more likely to be knocked down by an ambling bike than a car.

The medieval walled town of Lucca is about a 15 to 20 minute drive down the Strade del Vino (the Lucca wine road).

Lucca has all the amenities you'd require whilst on holiday including amazing shops, bars, banks, restaurants, local markets, festivals and concerts. The Lucca Summer Music Festival held in July attracts many of the world's top performers.

It is well worth looking into what is showing in the amphitheaters and the main squares. Performance include Puccini recitals by local groups, to a James Brown, Duran Duran, The Killers or even a Bon Jovi concert.

Monsagrati village is only 5 minutes down the road (literally) and has 2 pizza restaurants, a pharmacy, supermarket and cafes for that all important Italian coffee

The prestigious beach resort of Forte dei Marmi is a 30 minute drive away, the drive alone is spectacular as you wind through the Tuscan countryside. You will be spoilt for choice between the hundreds of private beach clubs.

In our welcome information pack we provide one or two recommend beach clubs and contacts details depending on your needs. The town has several designer shops and boutiques and is a great place to grab a late afternoon cocktail and just watch the world go by, literally.

There's a lot to be said for Lucca as a base.

It's only a dozen miles from Pisa and fifty from Florence, while being less hectic than these honey-pots. Neither is the town so busy in summer as to go dead in winter. Going north from Lucca, the wooded hills soon turn into real mountains, often called the Apuan Alps or the Marble Mountains, which can be streaked with snow well into March.

This area, the Garfagnana, is up-and-coming for those who like to combine their Tuscan villages with highly scenic walks: its main centre is little Barga, but with transport one could explore the district from Lucca itself.

The rural territory around the Wine and Oil Route of Lucca, Montecarlo and Versilia, within the province of Lucca, is simply spectacular.

The captivating, penetrating beauty of the natural landscape and the richness of light and colours to be found there make it unique in Tuscany. Start by admiring the white marble-topped mountains of the Apuan Alps that form a backdrop to the blue seas of the Versilia coast from Forte dei Marmi to Viareggio.

We have made several friends in the wine world surrounding Lucca and can happily introduce you to one or two winemakers who would only be too happy to organise pre-booked private tours.

"Fantastico, Bellissimo!!!"

A truely beautiful, private and quiet retreat within easy touch of Lucca and the UK, Lots of great eateries, to many to mention, all within a short drive and within easy reach of Pisa airport in the heart of rural Tuscany. The accommodation is modern, very comfortable, beautufully finished with all mod cons and a private pool that is just fabulous. The property benefits from stunning views looking out across the pool down the valley while the front patio area is perfect for a chilled glass or two as the sun goes down. Our stay was relaxing and loved by all the family. This is our second stay at this property and each time it just gets better and better. Hoping to return again another year!
