The Tuscany region
Tuscany is known for its landscapes and its artistic legacy. Six Tuscan localities have been made UNESCO protected sites: the historical centre of Florence (1982), the historical centre of Siena (1995), the square of the Cathedral of Pisa (1987), the historical centre of San Gimignano (1990), the historical centre of Pienza (1996) and the Val d'Orcia (2004).
Tuscany is known for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano), and has 120 protected nature reserves.
Other agricultural products include Chianina cattle (origin of the famous "Fiorentina" steak) and the production of olive oil, principally in Lucca and the surrounding hills. The industry comprises factories producing Piaggio cars, motorcycles, scooters and aeroplanes, the texile industrial district of Prato, the petrochemical plants of Leghorn and the steel factories of Piombino.
Tourism is the economic backbone of the so-called "Cities of Art" (Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano), as well as on the coast and in the isles (Elba). Marble is quarried in the Alpi Apuane (Carrara, Versilia and Massa), in Garfagnana and in Lunigiana.
Lucca / Castagnori area
Lucca is an enchanting Tuscan city located 15 miles northeast of Pisa and 50 miles northwest of Florence. The city centre is surrounded by a unique 2.5 mile medieval wall which was transformed into an elevated tree-lined park; paved for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists and offering spectacular views of the city and its surrounding hills. Lucca is also known for its Gothic and Romanesque churches.
Though Lucca is less crowded with tourists than Florence and Pisa, it is nevertheless abuzz with activity well through the summer.
The Lucchesi also enjoy the Summer Festival concert series, which attracts such artists as Macy Gray, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Sting, James Taylor, Bonnie Rait and others. Due to the restriction of cars within the city's historic centre, students, tourists and Lucchesi alike enjoy the relaxed ambience as you would an Italian meal - slowly, and savoring each nuance that comprises this jewel in the Tuscan hills.
Lucca is the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini. The house in which he was born, in 1858, is now a small museum with portraits, scores, sketches and the Steinway piano at which he composed Turandot.
