The Tuscany region
Tuscany is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance movement, and its artistic heritage includes architecture, painting and sculpture, collected in dozens of museums in towns and cities across the region. Perhaps Firenze is the best-known city and the Uffizi, the Accademia and the Bargello in Florence are its museums. Tuscany was the birthplace of Dante Alighieri ("the father of the Italian language"), Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli. The Renaissance was a cultural movement than spanned roughly the 14th throgh the 17th century, beginning in Italy in the the late Middle Ages and spreading through the rest of Europe. Siena is one of the most lovingly preserved towns in Italy. The pride is the feature has ever characterised it. Wealthy, cultivated and pugnacious town, famous for Piazza del Campo and its Palio. The austere Torre del Mangia, symbol of the independence of Siena, overlooks the square. The whole town is full of aristocratic palaces. Siena is also the town of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Italy, and its devotion to the Saint is expressed in the gothic Cathedral and the churches of S. Domenico, S. Francesco, S. Maria del Carmine and S. Maria degli Angeli, gothic and renaissance jewels.
Tuscany is known for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano), and has 120 protected nature reserves. Other agricultural products include Chianina cattle (origin of the famous "Fiorentina" steak) and the production of olive oil, principally in Lucca and the surrounding hill.
Lucca / Piana di Lucca area
Many definitions have been given to Lucca, one of the most famous Italian cities, located on the left-hand bank of the river Serchio. Rarely has a city identified itself so closely with its ring of walls as Lucca has done, especially as its monumental defences were never taken by siege! The historical centre, where the square layout of the Roman colony can still be seen, features sumptuous palaces, gardens and ancient medieval towers.
Green areas are an important feature of the city and one is even perched on top of the Guinigi tower. As regards works of art, we shall first mention the cathedral of St Martino which contains the famous funeral monument to Ilaria del Carretto, a masterpiece by Jacopo della Quercia.
Lucca is also a musical city as it was the birthplace of important musicians such as Luigi Boccherini and Giacomo Puccini. Garfagnana is the more mountainous and isolated area of the province and its history and characteristics are noticeably different from the rest of the province. Some of the most famous representatives of literary and musical culture left their mark in the Lucca area (during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries). As well as Boccherini and Puccini, Carducci also came from Lucca. In Piana di Lucca, there are churches, castles and ancient hospitals along what was once the route of the old Via Francigena.
The well-known renaissance villas of Lucca, instead, lie at the feet of the Pizzone mountains (to the north-east of the city). And last but not least, Versilia and its famous coastline with fully equipped beaches and all comforts. But the sea at Versilia is also boats. The port of Viareggio, with its world-famous shipyards, the equipped beaches of Marina di Pietrasanta, Lido di Camaiore and Forte dei Marmi, give pleasure craft owners or lovers of sailing many opportunities to take to the sea on all kinds of boats. The sea is also a source of food and the fishing fleet of Viareggio is one of the most important in the upper Tyrrhenian. Just a few minutes away from the Versilia Riviera, there are the Apuan Alps: form the blue of the sea to the unforgiving mountain peaks. It is a varied and silent landscape with woods, valleys, picturesque villages, old mills and especially the suggestive marble quarries that are still working hard today. Versilia is bounded to the south by the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli nature park, a lacustral area featuring two natural areas with very different but equally interesting characteristics where nature offers landscapes that are unique for the fact that they are so close together (which accentuates their diversity and originality), not to mention the background, the sea, which ensures that no other protected areas are comparable to this.
