The Tuscany region
The northern region of Tuscany has the good fortune to be close to mountains and the Mediterranean sea.It is also famous for fascinating medieval cities, where travellers have visited for centuries to admire the art, churches and culture. With the high mountains in the Garfagnana where marble is still mined, to the gentle hills with olive groves, there is plenty to do and see, or simply relax on a white sanded beach in the Versilia.
Florence,Siena,Volterra and the stunning landscape of nearby Cinque Terre in Liguria can be reached by car, train or boat!
Lucca / Piana di Lucca area
It is possible to never leave the working village of Santa Maria Del Giudice as there is everthing provided for daily living. It offers a taste of Tuscan village life with the sounds of children playing, neighbours chatting and church bells ringing. The only thing which is missing is a bank, but there are numerous in Lucca if you need to change money.Within 5 minutes walk from Il Gelsomino are friendly and helpful grocers and a mini supermarket selling locally grown salad and vegetables. Fresh bread arrives daily. There are 2 communal outdoor swimming pools close by, plus tennis, golf and horse riding towards the coast.
Lucca is the nearest town,8km, which can be easily reached by car and local bus.Famous for peaceful winding lanes revealing churches, tiny piazzas and a Roman amphitheatre, it can be enjoyed on a hired bicycle or simply strolling along the magnificent walls. The region of Lucca is well known for excellent olive oil, and the area of Montecarlo is good for a large range of wines. Nearby to Lucca there are Thermal Spas, where it is possible to book a range of therapies. There are many excellent bars, coffee shops and restaurants for a welcome break if visiting the antique and craft markets or endless shoe shops is just too much!
In the summer months there are several music festivals for all tastes, from jazz in Pistoia to the ever popular Summer Festival open air concerts in Lucca's main square. plus the famous operas bt Puccini perfomed in the open air by Lake Massaciuccioli.
