Home description

Castello is a peaceful, idyllic, romantic spot. A tiny medieval hamlet nestling in the hills. You will be living alongside the tiny local comunity of farming families who are so freindly and might sell you some amazing home grown olive oil if you ask.

If you enjoy relaxing whilst drinking in amazing panoramas or discovering ancient footpaths meandering up into the hills. If you want to explore the famous cities of art or hidden Tuscan villages or spend a day on the beach and then get away from it all ! Castello is for you.

Castello is conveniently 2km from the village of Valdottavo which has local shops, 2 bars and a restaurant,. There is a large supermarket at Marlia, 15 mins drive from Castello and the stunning walled city of Lucca is about 25 mins away by car.

My family restored this holiday home. It remains an authentic and comfortable village house.
It's furnished in traditional style with two spacious bedrooms.

Outside space includes a sun terrace and a shaded terrace with dining and barbeque facilities where you can enjoy to the full (hopefully with a glass of wine or two) the spectacular Tuscan countryside and breathtaking views which help make Castello so special.

The Tuscany region

Castello is just 15 kms north of Lucca, one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany and just 2 kms from the friendly village of Valdottavo.

Heading north a short distance from Castello, is the the Spa town of Bagni di Lucca with it's fabulous open air spa water swimming pool and spa treatment centre.

Then there is the historic walled city of Barga not to mention many beautiful hidden villages to explore and skiing at Abetone, an hours drive away.

The delightful Cinque Terre -5 amazing little fishing ports - on the Ligurian coast line are a must do and less than an hour from Castello, along with Porto Venere.

Florence is an easy trip just over 1 hour.

Siena and San Gimignano about a 2 hour drive away.

The beach with lively cosmopolitan resorts like Viareggio, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi and miles of golden sand is about 45 minutes away.

Pisa Airport is 45 minutes by car and Florence airport about an hour away.

There are excellent motorway and rail connections from Lucca

Local activities include swimming, tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, the beach with wind surfing and surfing lessons available.

Lucca / Media Valle del Serchio area

The whole area is rich in historic and cultural interest. Castello lies approximately 15 kms. north of the ancient walled city of Lucca.

Castello is situated at the gateway to the Garfagnana, the mountainous area of Northern Tuscany which is a naturalists paradise with caves and gorges to explore, abundant plant and animal life to identify and hidden villages where time stands still.

Lucca is a charming and beautiful city, with its priceless art treasures, narrow cobbled streets flanked by imposing palazzos, secluded squares, gardens and Romanesque churches.

Whilst retaining all the elements of its age and history one finds sophisticated shops and restaurants.

On the third weekend of every month there is a fantastic antiques fair which lasts for 2 days.

Throughout the summer months there are various classical and contemporary music festivals. We have had David Bowie, Elton John, Oasis, Jamiroquai and many other big names.

The Puccini open air opera festival takes place every year in the summer on Lake Massaciuccoli at Torre del Lago, south of Viareggio.

On top of the medieval walls which enclose Lucca there are wide and shady tree lined avenues. Here the locals cycle, walk their dogs and promenade. There are grassy ramparts ideal for relaxing after sight seeing or you can hire bikes and ride around the 4 kilometers of wall. A great way to see the city from up high.
