The Lucca / Media Valle del Serchio area
My house in Castello is just 15 kms north of Lucca, one of the most beautiful and unique cities in Tuscany and just 2 kms from the friendly village of Valdottavo with shops, bars and resaurant.
Lucca is a charming and beautiful city, with its priceless art treasures, narrow cobbled streets flanked by imposing palazzos, secluded squares, gardens and many, many churches.
Whilst retaining all the elements of its age and history one finds sophisticated shops bars and restaurants.
On the third weekend of every month there is a fantastic antiques fair which lasts for 2 days.
Throughout the summer months there are various classical and contemporary music festivals. We have had David Bowie, Elton John, Oasis, Jamiroquai and many other big names.
The most important date on the religious calender for Lucca is September 13th. The festival of the Luminaria di Santa Croce takes place. At nightfall the city is transformed, lit by candles and burning torches with processions with medieval dress and drummers drumming, it is like stepping back in time and well worth visiting.
On top of the medieval walls which enclose Lucca there are wide and shady tree lined avenues. Here the locals cycle, walk their dogs and promenade. There are grassy ramparts ideal for relaxing after sight seeing or you can hire bikes and ride around the 4 kilometers of wall. A great way to see the city from up high.
The Puccini open air Opera Festival takes place every year in the summer on Lake Massaciuccoli at Torre del Lago, south of Viareggio. The open air stage with the back drop of the lake and mountains is very atmospheric. a must for opera lovers.
Local activities include swimming, tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, the beach with wind surfing and surfing lessons available.

This peaceful and idyllic retreat was where we enjoyed one of our favourite ever holidays. (Castello 6 has the best views.) This is a holiday for the independent traveller who is prepared to make a little sacrifice in the search for total peace and relaxation. The location is not for everybody - over a mile off the beaten track, high up on an overhang that can only be reached by a winding single track. Not for the faint hearted! However, once at the property you can only marvel at the rustic charm, gasp at the views over the valley, open a bottle of Chianti and relax. The only sounds you will hear are churchbells in the far distance. The house is better than even the photographs suggest, full of rustic charm but with modern comforts. Lucca is fabulous and only 15 minutes away by car. Get lost wandering in the old streets, have a lazy lunch in the Piazza, and your stress level will soon come down. The owner is English, lives nearby, and is extremely helpful. |
