The Tuscany region
Tuscany' contributions to the worlds of art and architecture cannot be understated. Widely regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, the region is home to some of the worlds greatest artworks, housed in astonishingly beautiful buildings. Pieces by prominent Italian Masters such as Giotto, Donatello and Raphael are proudly and publically displayed in many of the areas museums, cathedrals (Duomos) and galleries.
If you prefer culinary art to Renaissance art then you should definitely take the time to explore some of the regions outstanding vineyards and olive groves. The area synonymous with Tuscan wine production is Chianti, a vast pastoral paradise situated between Florence and Siena. The winding roads, gentle hills and vast expanses of cultivated land are ideal for touring and dotted with ancient walled villages that offer the finest local produce for you to enjoy. Tours of the vineyards and groves are widely available and recommended. If you want to immerse yourself in the full Tuscan culinary experience then you can take cooking classes at some of the vineyards alongside the obligatory tasting.
The countryside around the apartment is breathtaking and very typical of Tuscany's lush green valleys and gently undulating hills covered in olive groves and vine yards. You can explore these rural areas in many ways and we do recommend either hiring a car or bicycles to do it properly, but bus tours are available. Taking a break in the countryside doesn't mean you have to stay there for your whole holiday. The coast is not far away and the Tyrrhenian Sea is one of the unsung highlights of Tuscany. Viareggio is Tuscany's biggest coastal city and it's only 30km drive. The long golden beach seemingly stretches for miles. Viareggio is famous for its carnival which takes place every spring. The iconic papier-mâché floats and masked parades are world renowned and quite a spectacle. There are other, smaller resorts dotted along the coast, including Forte dei Marmi, which has been an exclusive destination for the Italy's rich and famous for centuries.
The main cities in Tuscany are Pisa, Siena and Florence. Every summer legions of tourists swarm to see major attractions like Michelangelo's David or the leaning tower. It is easy to reach all three cities by public transportation from Lucca which is just 7km away from the apartment. This delightful walled city is often ignored by the crowds and as a result it's much more relaxed and more friendly than the tourist hot spots. One of the worlds largest parks has been planted on top of the fully restored city walls, giving visitors a unique way to experience the city. At ground level there is a beautiful selection of ancient churches, cathedrals and museums that are linked by ancient cobbled streets. Lucca is where the great composer Puccini was born, lived and worked. His legacy is kept alive in the city with a museum, statues and regular performances of his music. In complete contrast, Lucca also holds an annual summer rock festival which attracts big names from the both classic and contemporary rock music. Recent acts include Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and the Killers.
