Lucca is a hidden gem. Perfectly preserved within its ancient walls, it is an atmospheric, elegant city. The birth place of Puccini and Paganini there are nightly operatic recitals. Nearby there is the summer Puccini opera festival at Torre del Lago.

The beaches of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio are only 50 minutes drive away from this wonderful house, Florence is a one hour drive and Siena only 90 minutes away by car.

"wonderful retreat"

We just returned from a week at this lovely home and we can't stop talking about what a simply wonderful experience it was for us! The house is extremely well kept with nice furnishings and a modern kitchen where we cooked up gourmet meals every night (when we weren't enjoying the wood burning pizza oven outside). Each of the 3 bedrooms has air conditioning and a private bathroom with shower, but one of the bedrooms does have bunk beds so plan accordingly. There's a small deck outside with comfortable furniture for lounging while enjoying the magnificent view down over the valley and the city of Lucca with a backdrop of beautiful mountains. The pool is a welcome respite from the hot summer afternoons and enjoys the same view out over the valley. The gardens around the house are immaculate with honeysuckle, lavender, roses and a nice selection of fresh herbs as well as a lemon and an orange tree. The internet connection worked really well (for those of us who like to stay connected) and had a good signal everywhere except at the pool.

The location is perfect for relaxing in the countryside or for going out and exploring the area. Day trips to so many places are within reach - Lucca, Pisa, Forte de Marmi, Cinque Terre, Florence, Siena, and on and on. On our departure we drove up thru the Italian Riviera (Santa Margarita Ligure, Portofina) and on to Milan. It was a long journey but well worth the stunning scenery we took in on the way.

A few things to keep in mind: the house is in a sort of cul de sac with other homes and while there was no intrusion AT ALL from the neighbors, if you are looking for a completely secluded home this one is not for you. We enjoyed being in the rural setting but knowing there were other people around made me feel more secure. Also, a car is an absolute necessity but nerves of steel for managing the mountain roads are optional!

We travel very often for business and pleasure and have stayed everywhere from luxurious 5 star hotels to very simple guest houses in the countryside. This was, by far, our favorite holiday of the past few years. We truly enjoyed all of the amenities this wonderful home had to offer and we highly recommend staying here to enjoy everything the Tuscan countryside has to offer.
