The Tuscany region
Tuscany, one of the most beautiful and fascinating regions of Italy. Whilst visiting Tuscany one finds themselves in a region where every single small area has it's own particular charm, just waiting to be unearthed: from the famous art cities to the enchanting countryside.
Florence is the capital of the region, home city of Dante Alighieri, grand master of the Italian language and of Michelangelo a Donatello whose master peaces of art and culture have rendered this city famous throughout the world.
Siena is one of Italy' s most beautiful cities, situated in the centre of Tuscany between the Chianti area and Maremma, rich in history, art and popular traditions, it is the city of THE PALIO.
Pisa where you will find the marvellous Piazza dei Miracoli which houses the famous leaning Tower;
Lucca, the smallest but most characteristic city of the region which is sometimes quite rightly name " an island in the middle of the garden of Tuscany". Completely encircled by high 15th century walls, which are accessible on food or bicycle, the inner takes one back to the 15th century with it's narrow stone paved streets, high buildings and ancient Roman churches and palaces. The famous squares (S.Michele, S.Martino, Roman amphitheatre and others, the elegant and imposing palaces (Guinigi, Pfanner and many others) and the high towers (Guinigi with the trees growing at the top and the clock tower) have been maintained intact in their original beauty. During the year, Lucca houses many important cultural and artistic events which allows its visitors to experience unforgettable emotions. In April there is the famous flower market of Santa Zita. In July and August there is the Summer Festival and also the Festival of Giacomo Puccini. In September there is the Palio della Balestra and on 13th the illuminated procession of Santa Croce: November is the month of the famous comics exhibition and October has the Lyrics season at Teatro del Giglio.
The beautiful beaches of Versilia are also within easy reach of Lucca. Viareggio, elegant and refined, is one of the more famous coast resorts in Versilia and a tourist destination known all over the world. It is an amusement-centre, the country of the Carnival with Carnival’s “Cittadella”, of the Pucciniano Festival and of the night-refinement with its advanced anf first-rate night-clubs and premises. The night lights make room for a lively and coloured landscape in summer and for wonderful sunsets and tranquillity in winter.
Lucca / Media Valle del Serchio area
Between unscalable chains of the Apuan Alps and of the Appennino lies the high and medium Valley of Serchio, rich in history and traditions. The history has left here marks on the city planning, on the palaces and on the defending walls. The valley is full of small villages where life follows the traditional activities, but the main quality is the presence of a still uncontaminated environment. It is possible to walk for entire days all around it 60.000 hectares of woods, where the charming nature is continuously changing. In the woods there is an alternation of hornbeams, turkey-oaks and birches. You can reach the beech-woods, then the moors and the meadows.

Further details outdoors: Gello, like so many Tuscan settlements, clings to the side of a hill overlooking valleys, hillsides and mountains with terraced vineyards and olive groves. In the foreground and beyond, wooded slopes and picturesque villages. Gello is a peaceful place, totally unspoiled; it retains its slow tempo and traditional way of life. It has been home for generations of Italian families who still cultivate the surrounding land. The countryside surrounding Gello, is a delight and there are pleasant walks into the woods and across the hillside. There are excellent restaurants nearby.
There are no shops in Gello itself. It is however, not far by car to Diecimo where you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and there is a bakers - fresh bread and yummy cakes etc. There is also a bank and a post office. If you want the supermarket, the big Esselunga is on the road to Lucca - 20 mins from Diecimo or the Penny Market is in Borgo a Mozzano - 10 mins from Diecimo. There are numerous restaurants in the surrounding area - all very well priced and the local wine so inexpensive.
