Home description

Podere in Farneta is a restored set of buildings that make up a small-holding of 5 hectares with the swimming pool (6x4x1.5m) at its centre. The buildings, perched on the side of the mountain with panoramic views, consist of the main farmhouse (where the owners live) and a former ‘metato’ where traditionally sweet chestnuts were dried.

The metato has now been restructured as a small self-contained stone cottage (shown in the photo).Outside is a patio with views of the surrounding mountains, ideal for eating out. The swimming pool is to one side, with the farmhouse beyond, and a French bowling alley for ‘boules’ is to the other. There is also a traditional wood oven for bread making and cooking. The owner is a gourmet cook and offers meals on request. He points out that the thermal baths in Bagni di Lucca are only 8 kms away.

Altogether Podere in Farneta is ideal for people who are looking for a healthy, relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings.

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is a large and varied region of Italy. It is best known as the home of Florence (Firenze in Italian) where the renaissance of art and sculpture began in the 15th Century. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo both came from Florence. Galileo who proved that the earth goes round the sun also came from Tuscany. He was a native of Pisa and did experiments from the top of the world famous leaning tower.

Lucca is the provincial capital of this part of Tuscany. It is a medieval city on a plain and is still completely surrounded by its 16th Century walls. It has rightly become a noted tourist destination. The rolling hills around Lucca are famous for olive oil production.

Lucca / Media Valle del Serchio area

Podere in Farneta is situated near the small village of Vitiana high above the Serchio Valley in North West Tuscany. It is reached up a winding mountain road and has its own private unmetalled drive of 300mtrs descending steeply down the hill side making it unsuitable for larger cars. The ancient village of Vitiana, can be reached along tracks, a bar is planned to re-open there, please ask the owner for details..

The surrounding natural park consists of mountain ridges where sweet chestnut trees abound and where there are boar and wild sheep. Nearby is the Orrido di Botri – a local gorge with a unique flora – and the Prato Fiorito – a high up mountain pasture. The property is bathed in virtually all day sunshine and is nicely secluded.

Thermal baths in Bagni di Lucca are only 8 kms away.

How to get there

The most obvious airline is Ryan Air which now goes to Pisa from various UK airports, particularly from Stansted from where it goes all year round.

Pisa is also served by British Airways and an increasing number of Budget airlines.

Trains from Paris go directly to Pisa Centrale.

For this property a car is essential. Please enquire about car hire when you book

Further details indoors:
The cottage (Metato) is characterised by its stone features, terracotta and wood floors (upstairs), its chestnut wood beams and terracotta tiled roof. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, 1 double, the other (with low ceiling) a twin, suitable for children. The cottage is small and pretty and has been newly restored to a high standard.

A few metres away in the farmhouse is a mini-apartment (Il Nido) consisting of double bedroom and separate kitchen and shower room. Il Nido has its own separate entrance and separate outdoor area not overlooked by visitors to the Metato and can also be rented on its own. Please enquire separately if this is available as only the Metato availability is shown.

The pool is shared between the ‘metato’ and the apartment with many family groups booking both and appreciating the element of privacy afforded by having two separate spaces. (The owners never use the pool when there are visitors).

Further details outdoors:
The farm gets almost all day sunshine. The owners produce their own olive oil and wine and have planted vines, fruit trees and olive trees, so visitors should expect to be part of a small working farm. There is also a vegetable patch from which visitors are invited to help themselves. The panorama of the surrounding hills is extraordinary as are the steeply descending terraced slopes of the farm itself.

Further details

The cottage and mini apartment together allow room for 2 couples, 2 children and a baby (cot in Il Nido). Larger families appreciate the privacy that separate spaces gives them while if the 2 places are rented separately, visitors can be private within their own surroundings.
