Home description
Casa di Campagna has a private terrace and wonderful views. The farmhouse faces directly onto a track with a meadow sloping down in front. Here there is an abundance of space to play games and dip in the good-size blow up pool (big enough for adults to cool off as well).
The entrance to the house is round the side via a sunny courtyard, bright with pots of geraniums. The farmhouse atmosphere means that Casa di Campagna is ideal for people with children. Groups have also enjoyed the space and freedom to do 'one's own thing' (one year a group of musicians came), as have walkers and cyclists.

The Tuscany region
Tuscany is a large and varied region of Italy. It is best known as the home of Florence (Firenze in Italian) where the renaissance of art and sculpture began in the 15th Century. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo both came from Florence. Galileo who proved that the earth goes round the sun also came from Tuscany. He was a native of Pisa and did experiments from the top of the world famous leaning tower.
Lucca is the provincial capital of this part of Tuscany. It is a medieval city on a plain and is still completely surrounded by its 16th Century walls. It has rightly become a noted tourist destination. The rolling hills around Lucca are famous for olive oil production.
Lucca / Media Valle del Serchio area
Casa di Campagna is part of the village of Gromignana, high up on the Apennine side of the Serchio valley. Its origins go back to medieval times. The church tower, on its separate rocky outcrop, would have doubled as a watch-tower linking with that of Ghivizzano lower down. It is a village of separate farmsteads, sometimes linked together, sometimes surrounded by meadows grazed by sheep and with the odd strips of vines.
Coreglia, the principle village, a few kilometres away, still retains its medieval walls intact and bustles with shops,, bars, restaurants and even a bank. Here the most ancient church is San Martino dating from the 8th C., followed by San Michele (12th C.) the central church within the town walls.

Further details indoors: Visitors walk straight from the courtyard into the sitting / dining room. There is a traditional beamed ceiling, terracotta tiled floor and wood-burning fireplace with modern comforts of sofa, easy chairs and TV. The view from the front windows is straight across the meadows to the mountains of the Apuan Alps. Separate from the living room is the kitchen, modern, well-planned and equipped with fixtures and fittings in local chestnut wood. A tiny laundry room has been well fitted in under the stairs while the bathroom, with shower, comes beyond. The stairs are the original steep wooden ones (there is a low beam to watch out for if you’re tall) and lead up to a small landing and the three bedrooms. All of them are attractive, one is a large double with plenty of room for a separate single bed and views across to the mountains, the second has the same view and is a twin, while the third has a single bed with a view over the courtyard.
Further details outdoors: Outside, across the courtyard is the outdoor bread oven with a much appreciated separate toilet/washroom next to it. The yard is shared with the owner’s mother, Bruna, who lives next door. She is a warm-hearted country person who makes visitors immediately welcome and will also cook for them.
Altogether Casa di Campagna is ideal for people who enjoy the countryside. The wild flowers are exceptional, the air is fresh, the mountain scenery is stunning. The village shop provides basic provisions (you can have a coffee there too), and local people are friendly and open. For sightseeing connections are relatively good. The medieval city of Lucca is 45 – 50 mins drive away. there is also a station at Ghivizzano down in the valley with a direct connection to Lucca and Pisa
