About the home

Casa Maddalena is located in Torre, a small village. The house is on a small hill in a panoramic position, only 8 km from Lucca and 22 from the beaches of the Versilia coast. Bright and welcoming can accommodate up to 9 people.

Set on three levels, opens up with a dining room, beside a well equipped kitchen, large living room with panoramic windows on the green hills.

On the first floor there are two large double rooms with terrace and a large and elegant bathroom with Jacuzzi.

Upstairs office area with internet and pc corner, a spacious triple room with ensuite facilities and a double room with ensuite bathroom and large walk-in closet.

The house has a private garden of 400 square meters with a ping pong table and barbecue

The Tuscany / Lucca Province region

The province of Lucca, the northern part of Tuscany,is a very rich land. Its territory offers various landscapes and different environments in very short distances, from the high peaks of the mountains to the sandy beaches of the coast, passing by scenic and green hills in just 70km.

A land made of composite ancient villages, where you can discover treasures of Italian architecture, as the little theatre of glass (teatro di vetriano), its art cities like Lucca and Pisa and Pistoia near the foothills of the Garfagnana and Lunigiana, with their castles and fortifications. The historical centre, now a pedestrian precinct, plunges the visitor back in time and provides the perfect setting to savour the old world charm, where time and space take on a new dimension, no longer found in today's modern cities.

Meeting with the guide and visit to:
-Piazza S. Michele in Foro, to admire the church bearing the same name
-Piazza Napoleone, from this square we can admire Palazzo Ducale and Teatro del Giglio (the theatre)
-Cathedral San Martino, important destination for medieval pilgrims who came here to worship "Il Volto Santo"( The holy Countenance of Christ), is still today an important symbol of the city. Inside the sacristy is the renowned sarcophagus of Ilaria del Carretto by Jacopo della Quercia. A definite must (admission fee)
-Characteristic medieval streets, worthy of mention is "via degli antiquari" where we can see the fine antique shops and the teeming and smart Via Fillungo
-Piazza Anfiteatro, built on the ruins of the ancient Roman arena, is still today one of the most picturesque landmarks of the town
-Guinigi Tower, one of its kind, has a very suggestive tree lined hanging garden right on the top. A must to see
-Basilica di San Frediano, is one of the most ancient churches in Lucca, famous for the splendid gilded mosaic on the façade
-The 16th century Walls, built for defence reasons, are today a public garden for the enjoyment of all. You can take a leisurely stroll, ride your bike or even take a ride on a carriage to better appreciate their beauty

“We had such a good time here” We stayed here from March 31 to April 30. We were greeted by our wonderful agent, Cinzia, at the Hertz office, and she lead us to our house, which is an easy 10 minute drive from Lucca. Cinzia did an excellent job of orienting us and suggesting 'must see' placesfor our stay. The location is perfect for exploring Tuscany: we spent many days visiting places nearby, such as Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Barga, Garfagnana, Pistoia, Florence, Montecarlo, Montecatini, etc, all easily reachable within a couple hours from the house by car. Following Cinzia's advice, we stayed over for a couple of nights in Sienna (excellent hotel recommendation linked to Cinzia's husband), so that we could get to know that lovely city and its surroundings, but more budget-concious people could easily pay tolls on the Autostrada and do day-trips to the Chianti region if they wanted. We just had a wonderful time driving around in our little Fiat Panda diesel, finding surprising vistas and lovely little churches wherever we went. Regarding the house, it was obviously very spacious for us, since it sleeps 9 (you could easily throw in another 2 or three small kids). It was very cool to be able to host a friend who passed through his own 'suite' as his domain for the night. A small setback was the size of the one shower (tiny, at least by Canadian standards) available, and I would question whether that shower coupled with the huge whirlpool tub (no shower here) would adequately look after the needs of 9 guests. I would urge that the owners find a way to reimplement the shower on the second level, and introduce a shower option with the bath tub. But, the rest of the house: WOW. Patios off both main floor bedrooms, a very private patio off the bedroom on the middle level, view out of huge picture windows in living room and dining room is awesome, nice kitchen, lovely outdoor dining patio, huge hedged/fenced yard, beautiful walks right out of the gates. WOW. Also, very nice bakery within 5 minute walk, supermarket a couple kms up the road, Lucca downtown 8 km. We loved this place, and felt very much a part of the community.
