Lucca is one of the main cities of Italy, famous even outside national borders mainly for its intact city walls of the XV-XVII century, which describes a perimeter of 4,223 m around the historical center and is one of the four Italians cities to have an intact Renaissance walls, along with Ferrara, Grosseto, Bergamo. The Walls, starting from the second half of the nineteenth century have become a pleasant pedestrian promenade; they are still one the best preserved in Europe, as ever used in past centuries for defensive purposes (Note that until the early nineties of the 900, The walls were used - thanks to the considerable size of the road - as a real ring road for traffic, too heavy, around the city, the only example in the world of walls of this size and with this use).
The historical city center remained almost intact in its original form, and therefore can include a variety of architectural concepts, as many medieval churches of great architectural richness (Lucca has even been nicknamed the "city of 100 churches" just due to the presence of numerous churches in the old town, consecrated and not present in the past and now in the city), and bell towers, Renaissance palaces and monuments of excellent linearity style.
The city also boasts beautiful urban spaces: the most famous is surely to the square of the amphitheater, built on the ruins of the Roman amphitheater by the architect Lorenzo Nottolini and unique architecture.
Main thoroughfare of the historic city is the narrow medieval street Fillungo, which brings together the largest shops in the city.
Other picturesque squares are then Piazza San Michele, the historic heart of the city and the Piazza San Martino, religious hub where there is the famous Duomo di San Martino.
Piazza Napoleone (also called by Lucca Piazza Grande), was commissioned by Elisa Baciocchi during his principality, demolishing ancient medieval buildings including a church, and has been recently restored. With its structure, its trees, the surrounding streets that surround the central monument, all in symmetry to the Ducal Palace (now the headquarters of the Provincial Administration), is an example of the early nineteenth century Neoclassical Urban Affairs. Adjacent is located overlooking Piazza del Giglio where the eponymous Theatre (Teatro del Giglio), which is to be counted as traditional theater.
Precisely because of its immense wealth historical monuments has been recently advanced the proposal to include the historical center of Lucca in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
