The Tuscany region

Tuscany is one of the most well- known Italian regions in the world, famous for its art, history and beautiful landscapes. Strategically placed in the centre of Italy, it stretches over the slope of the Apennines and reaches the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The whole region is an unrivalled centre of art dating across the centuries, with Etruscan ruins (in Fiesole, Chiusi, Volterra, Populonia), Roman monuments, Romanesque architecture and impressive Gothic cathedrals. Of great importance is the exceptional artistic heritage of the Renaissance, the 15th century reawakening of art and culture.

The Tuscan landscape is mainly mountainous and hilly, with a flat area besides the sea (the Maremma). The coastline offers both long sandy stretches of beach and headlands. The small enchanting islands of the Tuscan archipelago are just off the coast. Cities: Florence, Siena, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto, Massa Carrara. Places worth visiting: In addition to art, Tuscany offers outstanding nature sceneries, such as the National Park of the Argentario and the Isola of Elba. In Siena there is the beautiful Piazza del Campo where the Palio horse race is held every year.

Lucca Historical Center

Lucca is a little town rich in art and culture and well-known as the jewel of Tuscany. Lucca is one of the few towns which has maintained its historical medieval town walls intact. These walls surround the historic centre with its many churches, towers, palaces, museums, traditional boutiques and characteristic lanes.Vehicles are not allowed on the city walls, therefore it is really a beautiful and fantastic stroll or bike ride. From the walls you have magnificent views onto the architectural beauties of the town and the rolling surrounding hills. In Lucca you can take lovely walks on the city walls , hire a bike, climb up one of the towers and enjoy the quaint view on the rooftops, visit the museum of modern art or that of the comics and much, much more. The city also offers a wide range of events the whole year around: the Summer Festival in month of July, classical music concerts (among which some are dedicated to the beautiful music of Giacomo Puccini), the antique and the arts and crafts market, the Comics and Games exhibition(in late October). Other towns such as Pisa, Florence, Viareggio are easily accessible by train or coach.
