The Tuscany region

The ancient beauty of Lucca and villas with beautiful gardens

Ancient villages to discover, thermal baths, 18th century villas in beautiful gardens. All of this and more is available in the Lucca area, which runs from the city of Lucca to the Appennine area, and is traversed by the passageway to the River Serchio.

The capital of this ancient and elegant land is Lucca. Famous the world over for its perfectly preserved medieval walls, it is a city rich in history and culture. Walking through its historic center, visitors are treated to myriad churches including San Michele, the Duomo and San Frediano. Lucca isn't called “the city of a hundred churches” for nothing! It also hides treasures like Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, built on the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre, or the Giunigi tower, whose roof is topped with a garden.

Lucca's surroundings are no less beautiful and striking. Visit Borgo a Mozzano, known for its Ponte della Maddalena (also called the Ponte del Diavolo), or Bagni di Lucca, renowned for its thermal baths since Roman times and visited by Shelley and Byron. Montecarlois also worth a visit, known for its excellent wines, and Altopascio, renowned for its bread, and was once a passageway for the Via Francigena in the Lucca area.

Nature lovers won't miss out on history in the Lucca area. Surrounded by the green hills and country palaces built by rich 15th century Lucca merchants. The most famous include Villa Olivia, Villa Grabau, Villa Reale, Villa Torrigiani and Villa Mansi.

Lucca Historical Center

Lucca is a city surrounded by medieval walls

It was the only City-State in Tuscany to have maintianed its autonomy until 1847. It is a unique town that is very proud of its independance and heritage.

It defended the freedom of the "Civitas", leaving intact its city walls that date back to the 16th century. The 4250km-long walls features towers and bastions that are still well-conserved today. Inside the medieval city, there are numerous monuments and artworks from the centuries, like the Roman Amphitheatre, the San Frediano Basilica, the piazza and church of San Michele, the San Martino col Volto Santo Cathedral, the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto, sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia, the Guinigi Tower, via Fillungo, Palazzo Ducale in Piazza Napoleone.

The monumental historic centre of the city has remained intact and still reflects its original layout and urban plan. It houses numerous medieval churches of great architectural importance (Lucca has been called the 'city with 100 churches' for the vast number of churches in the city centre), towers and belltowers, and monumental palazzos.

The city also features piazza dell'Anfiteatro, built by Lorenzo Nottolini atop the ruins of an older Roman theatre, and the main medieval thoroughfare, via Fillungo.
