The Tuscany region
The property is situated in the North of Tuscany. Set in the foothills of the Apennines with their covering of acacia, beech, pine and chestnut forests, the Apuan Alps form a dramatic backdrop.
'I Cipressi' is perfectly situated to allow access to every conceivable type of holiday.

Lucca - Garfagnana / Bagni di Lucca area
Considering its walled magnificence, the ancient capital of the province, Lucca, is still comparatively unspoilt by the tourist invasion. Within its walls there are no modern buildings to be seen.
If you feel you need to leave the comfort of the house and pool, apart from Lucca and the other major tourist attractions of Pisa, Florence, Siena and San Gimignano, the whole area has many exciting places to visit.
There is Forte dei Marmi, the highly fashionable resort town of the Versilian Riviera and her popular rivals of Viareggio and Pietrasanta.
There is the incredible spectacular scenery of the numerous secret mediaeval hill top villages and towns.
Also there are lakes and protected National Parks as well as the famous spa towns of Bagni di Lucca, where the Brownings, Shelley and Byron used to holiday, and Montecatini Terme, where the waters have been taken for centuries and are highly recommended for liver and skin ailments.
Sport:
For the energetic there is tennis, cycling, golf and fishing.
Tennis is available in most of the local villages and our representative will be able to advise you on the most enjoyable. There are tennis rackets at the house and of course there is table tennis equipment there also.
You can hire cycles in most villages and towns and it can be great fun either cycling around the Lucca walls or perhaps along the coastal promenades.
Although Golf is only just catching on in Italy, there is a superb 18-hole course at Montecatini, which is set in an old olive grove with cypresses. Golf clubs are available for hire, as are buggies. It really is a wonderful set-up.
There are water sports all along the Versilian Riviera, less than an hours drive away.
When weather permits there is fishing in the River Serchio.
Horse Trekking:
The horse riding and trekking is organised from numerous centres in a 32 km radius which vary in surroundings and facilities, from the ultra friendly local stables 6 km along the valley road, to the highly prestigious “Il Ciocco” Country Club 16 km away.
Hiking:
The Garfagnana is ideal for hiking. Detailed maps are available at the house.
You can really spread your wings as there are 350 km of trails in the Garfagnana and you can plan superb trips and join the locals in one of their favourite pastimes.
Italians are extremely keen on their weekend pusuits and there are bound to be facilities available for whatever your particular choice is.
Theatre / Opera / Dancing:
There are many concerts, operas etc. at various times of the year in Barga and Lucca, and The Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago (by Viareggio), is held at the end of July to the middle of August.
For the young and not so young there is a thriving all year round “discotheque” about 7 km from the house, that does have a good adult section, dancing to live bands and beer festivals from June onwards.
Food & Drink:
There is a magnificent choice of Restaurants in the area, from the sophisticated and highly regarded “La Mora”, which features in all the major guide books, to the excellent local Restaurants, Trattoria and Pizzeria, where for a few pounds you can enjoy the region’s many delightful specialities.
Within 5 km of the house are four excellent restaurants.
One of these specialises in fish while the others offer superb meat and home made pasta dishes.
The property is situated in the North of Tuscany. Set in the foothills of the Apennines with their covering of acacia, beech, pine and chestnut forests, the Apuan Alps form a dramatic backdrop.

Child facilities in the house include a cot or folding bed if necessary, a playpen, a high chair, baby gates and an alarm.
Full central heating is available for the cooler months and, it has to be said, snuggling up in front of a cosy acacia log fire in the sitting room as you play one of the board games or cards, is a most enjoyable way of spending your time during the darker autumn and winter evenings.
Further details
At the rear of the house is the magnificent 12 x 6 metres private swimming pool which is sunk into the hill, the views in all directions over the surrounding countryside are absolutely breathtaking.
Loungers and deckchairs are available for sun seekers. Shade is provided at the pool by the wisteria covered pergola and from the umbrella pines.
The pool is in the sun all day, from the early morning through to the evening, when glorious sunsets silhouette the distant Apuan Alps.
If you wish to continue swimming after dark, the pool can be illuminated.
Table Tennis:
Beneath the canopy of the charming listed barn shelters a full sized table tennis table. Bats and balls are supplied.
The Views:
From the garden swing outside the sitting room, the South facing view across the valley to Gioviano is quite stunning.
Not surprisingly, the vista has been painted, sketched and photographed by every party that has ever visited “I Cipressi”.
All bedrooms and the middle bathroom have views over the valley and the vista from the swimming pool in all directions is breathtaking.
The house has grounds of approx 2 acres, mainly fruit trees and woodlands which cling to the terraced hillside.
The fruits include cherries, apples, pears, figs and olives.
Opposite the house, there is a traditional Tuscan hay barn that contains farm implements and firewood.
Though it is fairly secluded, “I Cipressi” is not isolated.
A charming local man who lives in the village owns the neighbouring farm. He visits the land occasionally to tend his fruit trees.
There are other small working farms in the vicinity.
Barbeque:
In front of the listed barn there is an attractive stone barbecue with traditional oven type chimney.
No holiday is complete until you have experienced cooking over charcoal. Try enormous Florentine steaks sprinkled with minced fresh garlic and black pepper.
The drive from the hill road leads to a small car parking area just below the barn. It is sufficient for up to 4 cars.
A path scented by Lavender leads up to the house.

Guestbook
“This most excellent Tuscan farmhouse - what a joy. Having visited and stayed in Italy many times, especially at our favourite, Bagni di Lucca, this must rate as the loveliest holiday home we have ever stayed at. The views will be imprinted forever. Looking forward to our return here” The B. Family of Bearstead, Kent.
“I Cipressi was well up to our expectations and was well furnished, well equipped, clean, comfortable and charming. The swing chair on the patio was an ideal spot to doze off on a warm afternoon, and lunch overlooking the spectacular view, was a frequent pleasurable event. Full marks also for the Information Book which should be an industry benchmark and the large number of maps, guides, etc. which were very useful. The pool was excellent and immaculately maintained.” Mr. M. of Sheffield.
“From the exquisite scent of the wisteria by the pool to the yellow rose by the parking space, we loved the beautiful experience of “I Cipressi”. From the haunting mist in the valley in the mornings to the glorious sunsets in the evenings, we loved it. The view across to the mountain village of Gioviano will remain in our memories forever.” Mrs. C. of Porthcawl.
“We now have many photographs to prove to our friends that we were certainly not exaggerating when we described the house as ‘heaven on earth’! Many thanks.” Mrs. W. of Cambridge.
