The Limousin / Auvergne / Correze region

The Limousin region of France is recognised for its rolling green landscapes, interesting medieval history, beautiful lakes, culinary delights in truffles and foie gras, and its thriving market life. Recommended places for you to visit from Lubersac include:
•Arnac-Pompadour - home to the National Stud of France, major equestrian events, a 15th century chateau built for Mme Pompadour by King Louis XV and an impressive horse racing track viewable from street level;
•3 medieval, award winning “Prettiest villages in France”: Segur le Chateau, St. Robert and Collonges-la- Rouge. They feature medieval houses, cobbled streets and breath-taking riverside scenery.
•Gimel-les-cascades – a hillside village from which you can take walks past fast-flowing waterfalls (largest tumbles 45m)
•Brive-La-Gaillarde and Limoges, are your nearest large towns for shopping, nightlife and a café culture, in a medieval setting
•and Lake Vassiviere – famous for its safe beaches and water sports
Other popular activities include pool and lake swimming, canoeing, fishing , walking & horse riding.
The Lubersac / Pompadour area
Lubersac is approximately 4 miles drive from the Cottage. It is a charming village with a tourist information office, 2 restaurants, 2 bakers, 2 chemists, 2 large supermarkets including a 24 hour petrol station and 2 bars. A well maintained open air swimming pool open to the public in the summer is signposted from the village square. Also on the square is a newsagent that sells European and US national newspapers (The Telegraph, Daily Mail, Tribune...). The best market days are Sunday morning for Objat market (25 mins drive) or Saturday morning for Brive (30 mins drive). You will find a colourful and interesting array of local truffles, duck products, live chickens and pets, herbs, cheeses, clothes and shoes at these markets. The nearest lake for swimming is a 20 minute drive at Vigeois - it has a sandy beach, diving boards, pedalos, snack hut and trees that offer shade. It is ideal for small children because the water is shallow and calm. Lifeguards are also in operation. You could also visit Treignac (45 minute drive) which has a small children's playground in addition to the facilities at Vigeois. Lake Vassiviere is great for all watersports and a further 10 minute drive after Treignac. As you tour the local area, look out for signs advertising open-air public barbeques and dances in the local villages. They are great fun and provide a cultural experience of French rural life.

Guestbook for La Panetterie
Z Masson: "Wonderful location. You wake up to birdsong and beautiful woodland countryside. The only traffic in the lane is the odd passing car or tractor. Yet shops, restaurants, picturesque country villages and lakeside beaches at Lubersac, Pompadour, Lake Vassiviere and Brive are all in easy driving distance"
T Stone and friends: "A beautiful house furnished to a very high standard for a holiday home. We loved the peacefulness and will be back next year. Thanks to Colin and Gwenda for making us feel so welcome"
A Massimetti: "A visit to Gimel-les-cascades waterfalls is recommended - the falls and scenery are very impressive and cooling on a hot day. I also recommend the best Croque Monsieur I have tasted at the Gambrinus bar in Lubersac"
