The Northumberland region
The Northumberland coastline is a land far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a county brimming with things to do and places to see amongst the most spectacular of landscapes.
Explore mile upon mile of the wonderful uncrowded golden sandy beaches and stunning countryside set amongst two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the rugged Northumberland National Park. Discover more castles than anywhere else in England, the birthplace of English Christianity on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the historic World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, stunning Alnwick Garden picturesque towns and villages and much more.
There are plenty of golf courses and lots of activities and some great walking.
Low Newton by the Sea
From Beach Retreat, walking along the beach southwards, you will reach Embleton Bay (approx. 1 mile). To cross the river you have to walk inland, passing Dunstanborough Castle Golf Clubhouse, before continuing South towards the ruins of the 13th Century Dunstanborough Castle. From Beach Retreat this is about a 2 mile walk. If you fancy trying some traditional Craster Kippers, keep going for another 30 minutes to Craster village.
If you head north you can walk along to Newton Point and then you come to Football Hole, a small, often quiet bay between Newton Bay and Beadnell Bay. If you want to head back inland it is possible to do so and you will come out at the end of the road at the Joiners Arms pub, about 1 hour road trip. This is a busy family friendly pub open 7 days a week. The other pub in Newton, The Ship Inn, is about a one minutes walk from the Beach Retreat, in the main square, famous at lunch time for its crab sandwiches.
